Work alongside doctors and physical therapists in sports medicine division by transferring information back and forth between the different offices, organize paperwork, and assist patients. Working with the physical therapists and the sports medicine physicians allowed me to see the unique balance between two different professions. They are crucial team members that work in tandem with each other to heal a patient with an injury such as an ACL tear.
While shadowing at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, I was able to witness numerous specialties over the course of three years. These included plastic surgery (MD), cardiology (MD), pediatric surgery (MD), sports medicine (DO), and otolaryngology (MD). During my time as an observer, I was able to witness multiple different surgeries and ask physicians questions regarding the procedures. He provided me knowledge about his experience as a DO, as well as talking about the different procedures performed on each patient.
During this shadowing experience, I was able to witness family medicine (MD) and witnessed outpatient care. The physician gave me numerous tips about certain cases and how she would handle them.
As a sports medicine student, I am responsible for attending assigned practices and games/athletic events. While attending, I am responsible for assistant athletic trainers with taping/wrapping injury areas while also assisting in therapy areas such as STEM and ultrasound. I am trained how to do numerous first aid techniques that are used frequently, and I am also trained in CPR, AED, and spine
