Heart Vs Mind: What I’d Like or What I Love I have played sports for my entire life. Football, baseball, and basketball have always been important things to me. Since I have become older, I have a desire to be a coach for one of these sports. Coaches typically teach amateur or professional athletes the skills they need to succeed at their sport (Coaches and Scouts). I would be around many people who have the same passion and interests as me in the coaching profession. If a person suggested that I become a coach because of the salary, I simply would laugh. High school coaches often do not receive a large salary (Coaches and Scouts). If I was scouting a particular job that had a good salary and benefits, I would start by looking at being a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers design and develop methods for extracting oil and gas from deposits below the earth’s surface (Petroleum Engineers). This job interests me because of the incredible salary and benefits. It also is appealing due to the lucrative travel opportunities that the job often provides. Although being a petroleum engineer might be fun, coaching could lead to much more excitement be quite reminiscent of what I have done in my life leading up to this point. The work
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.

There are many concerns about the safety, training, organization, philosophy, communications, and general management in coaching. According to the California High School Coaching Education and Training Program as stated in the Coaching Education Legislature Assembly Bill No. 2741, “It is a conservative estimate that at least 25,000 coaches annually need training and an orientation just to meet current coaching regulations contained in Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations, including basic safety and CPR requirements.” That is why course techniques of coaching specific sports are necessary for a persons not trained and certified as a physical education teachers because they need to understand the basic philosophy and principles of athletics in education, know the health related aspects of athletics, and the techniques used to coach a specific sport. With every coach there are the little pieces of the game…strategy of offense and defense, practice/game planning, or scouting, but to get the whole picture they need to know the basic philosophy and principles, health aspects, and the obvious techniques.

My heart was beating loud and fast in my chest. It was getting harder and harder to keep myself above the icy water and my body was slowly shutting down. I tried to fight back by thrashing my arms and legs around but I quickly got tired and my limbs were going numb. Screaming was no use as it barley sounded like there was any noise escaping my mouth.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
Becoming a coach has different ways. It can take some college, often teachers must teach in a field that matches their bachelor’s degree. Now there are coaches that teach as well or athletic coordinators. Athletic coordinators are coaches that deal with just sports and do not teach. Those have to go through a different process that regular coaches. For becoming a coach some have to know some health levels. With being a coach , athletes often get hurt and need to know how to properly take care of it. Sometimes when wanting to coach a specific sport you may have to have some background with that sport. Why would they just throw someone to teach kids something when the coach doesn 't know what he is talking about. It better to have a coach with experience to pass good skills to

My personal philosophy is: I am a coach because of my love for the game and my wanting to teach this passion to others. I believe that playing a sport will not only prepare a child to win, but also for life and the challenges that come with it. I will strive to help every athlete to compete to the best of their ability, while ensuring that are learning skills that will later on better them in their everyday lives.

It was on a very special day on August 22, 2002, at 8:22 at night I was born. Little, cute, and chubby Alexis Dejesus Ojea Jr. was finally born.It took 6-8 hours of my arrival, but once I was there it was a relief and my mother made many phone calls once I was finnaly here. I get my name from my father except he’s not a junior he’s a senior and my nickname that I use today is Alex. My mother told me if I wasn't named Alexis I would of been named Tyler.
Jeff Kemp, a retired professional NFL quarterback, once stated, “Sports teach positive lessons that enrich America even while revealing its flaws” (Kemp). Athletics offer so much more than the joy of game day and the thrill of a win. Being involved in sports holds the key to a world filled with passion, excitement, and once in a lifetime opportunities. There is nothing better than seeing the student section arrive in full force or hearing the school fight song chanted before kickoff. However, when life moves on and leaves sports behind, the lessons it has instilled in athletes never disappears. The play calls may be foggy and the jersey will be too tight, but what was innocently learned in the jersey shines out at an older age. Although life lessons can be learned through everyday activities, lessons such as teamwork, self-confidence, and dealing with failure are only truly learned through sports by young athletes.
