A leadership experience that I had, that influenced my goals, was when I was the Senior Patrol leader in my Boy Scout troop. I enjoyed having the leadership title and the opportunity, but I did not enjoy all the time the stress that came with the job title. Things were especially stressful when events tasks didn't go the right way and I had to find a solution to the problem immediately. When things are getting tough and people are looking for someone to take charge, I want that person to be me. I believe that I was born to be a leader, because my best work results from when I get control in a situation. In a group setting, something could be as small as a playing a board game or as big a final project, if I want it to go well then I need the lead. All through my life I have held informal leadership roles, such as the ones mentioned previously, and have earned formal leadership positions as well. A particular formal role that I have possessed was being elected captain of my high school varsity basketball team. This role taught me a lot about how to execute with a group of differently skilled people all seeking a common goal, a major component in leadership. The other position I held was being a Peer Leader for my high school, a club that involves mentoring underclassmen in their transition from middle school. This experience taught me to direct a different dynamic, people who need to be taught as well as lead.
Great leaders are few and far between, but everyone possesses the power to be a good leader. I have only been in the military for about three and a half years; most of this time has been spent at CMR St-Jean and RMCC. I have yet to be put into any major leadership roles, but from what I have been able to accomplish in regards to leading others and the leaders that I have been able observe over the last few years, I have started to slowly figure out what type of leader I would like to become. According to Johns and Saks (2014) leadership is, “The influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” (206). From past experience, influencing others to do something can be complicated at times but can be accomplished by staying focused on the task at hand. The leadership roles I have been able to take part in have brought me to the conclusion that cohesion is the core factor of how I lead.
I have learned valuable leadership lessons that I can use and even tell others about as well. My goals in life are vast because I want to accomplish a lot in my life and I think leading my life the right way, is important. My goal as of now, is to continue education to receive a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology. I’m motivated to push through more education to reach my goals of becoming successful in psychology because that is what I want in life. I want to help others and be successful in something that makes me happy in life, because it is not about the money. I think knowing about different leadership styles and types will help me in the future with jobs and dealing with employers. My objectives for my future are to eventually graduate my Master’s program, get a job, and to just live a good, happy life. I will attain these things with hard work and determination that I already possess inside of me, I’m very hard on myself at times because I want to do the best I can and I think that will continue to make me successful in life. Two things I will do to continue leadership in my future are one, to obtain an internship or field experience while in my program so I can learn how to lead when I become a professional in the psychology field and two, continue to learn about leadership from my job and volunteer position at MADD.
A key component to leadership is to master skills that one already possesses. The greatest leaders in the world do not necessarily stem from the best universities or some costly academic background. One of the strongest traits a person can have is understanding what their leadership style is. When one understands his or her leadership style this can work strongly to one 's advantage. The goal is to garner the best results with the least amount of effort whenever possible therefore many particulars exist which can add to this equation and understanding one’s personal leadership style is a great place to start.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. Good leadership requires that the individual recognize the need for change to motivate their employees to accomplish the task at hand or to reach common goals. Understanding the importance of leadership is essential. However, the key element to focus on is what steps can be taken to improve one’s leadership capabilities. For many individuals this may be a difficult question to answer and may only be possible through self-assessment and reflection.
I was raised in the island of Puerto Rico, which helped to be raised oblivious of segregation based on skin color, religious preference, political division, race background and with a great sense of respect to my elders. The Caribbean is a big pot of interracial mix, which makes a fun place to raise your children. No matter if you are from Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, or Virgin Islands we all are Caribbean’s. Every island ensures to create a sense of respect and idealization to their little piece of the Caribbean, but also a lot of respect to the neighbor island at the same time. Your elders make sure that you understand your place in the pyramid in your family, and the only way to go up on it is as your get older. I got raised
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.
Being a leader for in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position would be my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities to my everyday life. Throughout this two year experience the quality that I feel tested more than others, was the quality of patience. Often times before I held this position, I found myself becoming extremely impatient with individuals and situations when they would not go the way as planned or as smoothly as I had planned for them to go. This position taught me that not all situations are going to run smoothly and that we need to make the best of what we are presented with. It also taught me that not all individuals learn at the same pace, the same way, and at times do not handle individuals close to their own age giving instructions on how to complete a task. With this realization, I found myself trying to find methods of teaching that appealed to all individuals as well as found ways of not coming off as trying to force individuals to complete the tasks the way that I see fit.
