I had the opportunity to be a part of the pediatric team during my one month internship. I got to see the different aspects of pediatric care including wards, PICU and NICU. One particular incidence that resonates with me is a day in PICU when a 10 year old HIV+ boy became comatose. The family wanted to take the boy back home for his last few days. I was given the responsibility to bag the patient and transport till the ambulance. My first experience with children was when I would babysit younger kids. Caring for them while they were sick brought a sense of joy nursing them back to health. After doing this for so long, I grew a passion for taking care of children as a profession. I want to help kids feel better and watch them grow into world-changing individuals, so that is why I chose Pediatric Nurse Practitioner as my career. With this goal in mind, the University of Pennsylvania is the ideal school for me to explore and master this field of knowledge.

In the beginning of my senior year I was eager to expand my understanding of how it would be to work in a hospital. An opportunity arose allowing me to volunteer in the hospital at the University of Chicago. I was able to volunteer at the children's playroom, which consisted of a weekly commitment. The daily tasks I had to perform where to enlighten the spirits of children and reduce the amount of anxiety that developed within them when they approached a hospital visit. I would play games, read books, or just company the patients at their bedside. I especially love to interact with the younger patients because their laughter and innocence warms my heart up.

When people think of a pediatric nurse practitioner, they normally think of a person who performs examinations, takes blood samples, and measures vital signs of children who are sick. What they don’t see are the countless hours spent getting to know the patient, showing sympathy and understanding, and having to explain the diagnosis and treatment plans to the parents and sometimes to the child. According to my career cruising inventory, any job in the medical field would be right for me. It was becoming increasing clear to me that the hospital environment was a community that I knew one day I wanted to be a part of. For three summers, I shadowed one emergency room physician who has been an amazing role model and mentor. This exposure taught me not only a plethora of terms, but to think critically and quickly and to prioritize and reason in ways that had immediate benefit. I also learned a great deal about bedside manner, and how important it is to be culturally and emotionally sensitive to patients. Like my family, this physician noticed so many important things about people- who they are and what matters to them. She knew just when to touch someone on the shoulder, or to step back. She accounted for age and class and race and subtleties that don’t even have words. She viewed each patient as a whole person. One night a woman was brought into the ER after a car crash and needed a neurological exam immediately. She was wearing a hijab. This physician kindly addressed the woman and asked her if she wanted the door closed while she took off her hijab. Although not every patient is easy to deal with and doctors are under colossal pressure, by inspiring students with a possible future in the medical field to get involved with type of community service early we can ameliorate the distressing situation. Coming into contact with, speaking to, and intimately understanding these incredible individuals can dramatically alter one’s perspective and ensure treatment with self respect and dignity. I strongly believe in this notion of early involvement. My changed view coupled with my future medical training in college will allow me to be a figure to emulate and hopefully inspire others to follow this path. By embarking on this monumental journey mankind has the opportunity to shape history and enrich the lives of others while personally experiencing the most rewarding of all endeavors: helping someone in need.
As a first-year Graduate student in Health Services Administration, I am eager to improve the health status of our community, especially the poor and under-served. I chose a career as a medical assistant because of the rewards I knew I would experience on a daily basis. I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit. They are in a position which requires continued education and research in the development of the nervous system and its diseases. They work with the child and their family to educate, provided care, and provide support pertaining to the disorder. I had the opportunity to intern with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. While there, I had the opportunity to work with a variety of doctors, from different sub specialties of pediatric orthopedics as well as attend conferences and interact and learn from pediatric orthopedist from around the world. I also got to see and work with children who have rare bone deformities, quite often and understand conditions and diseases some practitioners may never get to see. When observing in the operating room, the experiences were very detailed, and student friendly. The doctors would explain what they were doing at each step, and work to clarify confusion if I had questions. The doctors treated me as a competent student and would allow me to observe from alongside them as they worked. This personal explanation style was the same in all the clinics, from club foot to sports. The doctors were all very diligent about teaching and explaining each case as well as the ramifications of not treating a condition, or the benefits to waiting for intervention.
