Every family is unique in dynamic and nature. Parenting styles within families vary depending on circumstance and principal. What defines parenting styles is the approach that parents take on raising their children and the psychological and social effects it has on their child’s development. These parenting techniques influence the child’s lifestyle and beliefs throughout their life and have lasting effects on the child’s adulthood. This type of parenting is very warm and accepting, but lacks structure and control. These parents do not have many rules and let their kids get away with anything. There are two extremes as to why parents act this way. One way is that parents are seen to try to be more of a friend to their kids than a parent because they are out of touch with their child’s generation. Another excuse for permissive parenting is when parents claim they do not have time to exert control over their children because of external factors such as work. Kids that come from these backgrounds can be seen as impulsive, dependent, disobedient and rebellious. These children from permissive households seem to do poorer in school and have trouble with social skills as well. An example of permissive parenting is seen in the movie “Mean Girls” When the mom tries to be friends with all of her daughter’s friends. The mom in the movie is more concerned with being a part of the gossip than actually trying to parent her child properly. The mom gets her daughter everything she wants and has no rules or regulations. These lead to her daughter’s awful and mean behavior in the movie because her mother never taught that the world did not revolve around her and acting out was not acceptable in society. The functions that parents perform greatly influence how children develop. A tremendous amount of research has been done on the effects of parenting styles since 1966 when Diana Baumrind first published her three prototypes of parenting styles, but many parents fail to understand the power they possess in shaping the future lives of their children and the need for a responsible strategy regarding the rearing of their children.
Permissive style—also known as the indulgent style—dominantly focuses on nurturance, but not as much in regards to control, maturity demands (level of expectations), and communication. Therefore, despite the high tolerance and warmth of the parents, permissive style often results in unfavourable outcomes in a child. However, in this type of parenting style, authoritative parents are more responsive to their child, more willing to listen to questions and more forgiving rather than punishing when their child fail to meet expectations. Research suggests parenting styles and the quality of a parent and adolescent relationship may have a impact on the psychosocial development among adolescents. Psychosocial development can be referred to as how an individual’s emotions, mind, and maturity level can develop throughout life (CITE). Erik Erickson’s psychosocial theory describes adolescence development through a series of eight stages based on the impact of social experience. Erickson’s theory also involves each stage building upon one another based on the completion of previous stages. Other factors involving the psychosocial development of adolescents include varying parenting dimensions that could affect these developmental outcomes such as: demandingness (control) versus responsiveness (acceptance) and structure versus non-structure. Parenting styles and the role of parenting are all aspects in helping achieve optimal psychosocial development. The purpose of this paper is to examine how parenting styles influence psychosocial behavior in adolescents.
This style of parenting is best described as the child having more control over the parent. There are a lot of parents today that seem to have no control of their child actions and even words. This in which can make the parents question what are they doing wrong when it comes to raising their child. This type of parent have very low demands and are highly responsive, maybe even too responsive to the child’s needs. Although these parents are very loving of their children they do not have many rules that their child should abide by (Cherry, K. 2017, para.1). Not setting ground rules gives the child the freedom to do whatever they want and know that they will not receive a harsh, if any punishment at all. Also, parents who are permissive tend to want to be their child’s best friend. The child in this parent in child relationship tends to have more control than the parent. If there are not any rules in place to be followed the child will eventually resort to negative behaviors, and may even be insure because of the low discipline from their parents (Cherry, K. 2017, para. 9). In this study, another relationship between parenting styles and child development is presented. Participants were 7,836 adolescents enrolled in six high schools in San Francisco. They were provided with a questionnaire that included student background information, self-reported grades, parental attitudes and behaviors, and family commutation information. The study included three parenting styles, which were authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. Each one of the styles were described in the students’ questionnaire. The authoritarian style included the idea that as a response to a bad grade, parents tend to get upset, and when good grades are achieved, parents tell the student to do even better than what they have done. On the other hand, permissive parenting style was described as parents no caring about the students’ grade, and that hard work in school is not important for them. Then, they included authoritative parenting style as supportive parents that praise the student when good grades are achieved and more freedom to make decisions is given, but when poor grades are obtained, freedom is taken away and students are encouraged to try harder and some source of help is
Webster’s dictionary defines parenting as the process of raising and education a child from birth until adulthood. Everyone has or had a caregiver, whether it be pests, animals or human beings. However, the thing that differs is the method of parenting. There are many methods of parenting, but there are only three main parts. They include authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style, and democratic parenting style. The next few paragraphs will give the reader a detailed description of these three parenting methods and what my parents have used in parenting me.

Parenting styles are defined as the “manner in which parents express their beliefs on how to be a good or bad parent.” (4) Each parenting style has its weaknesses and strengths. Parents and their parenting style play an important role in the development of their child. In fact, many child experts suggest that parenting style can affect a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological development which influence not just their childhood years, but it will also extend throughout their adult life. This is because a child’s development takes place through a number of stimuli, interaction, and exchanges that surround him or her. And since parents are generally a fixed presence in a child’s life, they will likely have a significant part on the child’s positive or negative development (Gur 25).
Parenting styles are as diverse as parents themselves. Parenting is one of the most challenging and difficult responsibilities a person can face. The way a family is structured is called the parenting style. Parenting styles are collections of parental attitudes, practices, and non-verbal expressions that characterize the nature of parent-child relationships. Because individuals learn how to parent from many different examples including their own parents, role models, society and life experiences. Parenting techniques can vary greatly from household to household, however, experts believe that parenting styles can be broken down into four main categories which include permissive,authoritarian,authoritative,and neglectful.
There are four types of parenting styles: authoritative (are accepting and involved in their child’s life, but also have achievable goals and expectations for the child), authoritarian (are not accepting or very involved in their child’s life, and set unrealistic goals and expectations for the child), permissive (are overly accepting and indulgent or their child, and set minimal or no goals for the child), and uninvolved (are withdrawn from the child’s life, and make minimal or no goals for the child). I was raised by my grandparents and mother with my aunt often helping early on.I believe I experienced different parent method from different people at different times in my life. For the early part of my childhood, I believe the parenting method of my grandparents and mother were permissive (which I believe was influenced by them feeling bad for me because my father had died)- they would let me do almost anything I wanted and I lacked any responsibilities (I was given almost any toy I wanted, they would play with me whenever I wanted, I was allowed unlimited access to sweets and soft drinks, I had no chores, and was never expected to clean up after myself).
Diana Baurmind and Alfred Adler have similar categories of parenting styles. Authoritative parenting can be compared to democratic and encouraging. Both of these styles offer love and security of the child. They express the parent is in control, but the parent also respect their child with explaining parental actions in a positive way. Permissive parenting can be compared to over-submissive parenting style. The child is rude, and demanding. The parent usually accepts the child’s behavior. In my opinion, the parent does not want to upset the child, or bother with correcting the behavior, so they will give in by rewarding the child in order to correct the child’s behavior. Authoritarian parenting can be compared to over-coercive parenting. These parents are very strict with children. My father can be compared to this parenting style. There was no reasoning, no communication, and his actions were final. This kind of parenting reminds me of being in the military. Finally, uninvolved parenting can be compared to neglecting parenting. I almost wanted to compare uninvolved to rejecting, but I cannot necessarily say the parent has denied acceptance. The parent is selfish, and does not even provide the bare minimum for their child’s necessities. I can compare this type of parenting from a 16 year old mother from the show Teen Mom’s.
