Organic Foods vs. Non-organic Foods

“According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) officials, there is currently no direct evidence proving that an organic diet leads to improved health or lower risk of disease.” (50 Interesting Facts about... Organic Food, 2011) This is an interesting statement with the newest trends in the United States being eating healthier and getting in shape. Many people’s New Year’s resolutions are around getting to the gym more often or eating healthier and watching their calorie intake, but do they commit to it? And what does healthy eating mean to each of these individuals? Does it mean only buying organic foods? Many people are claiming to only buy organic but how it is different than the typical processed foods that fill the grocery store shelves?
People that buy only organic food normally state some of the following reasons; they’re safer, they’re kinder to the environment and they’re healthier. (Watson, 2012) In the following paragraphs we will dig deeper into more elaborate explanations of these meanings and take a look at how organic food compares to non-organic food.
Is there a difference between organic foods and non-organic foods? Size and shape of food is a huge factor that catches our eye right off the bat. If all labels and signage were to be removed from the grocery store, you would still be able to pinpoint which produce was organic and which was not? Organic foods seem to be “imperfect” meaning that most of the time they will be varying sizes and shapes. Some melons may be larger or smaller and some may be more ovular rather than circular.
