To what extent can occupational psychology help to increase innovation in the workplace?

Occupational psychology according to the British Psychological Society(BPS), ‘Occupational Psychology is the application of the science of psychology to work. Occupational psychologists use psychological theories and approaches to deliver tangible benefits by enhancing the effectiveness of organisations and developing the performance, motivation, and well-being of people in the workplace.’ This essay is based on this definition of occupational psychology. A schema is a cognitive theory that suggests we create a template of any and everything which we can add to throughout life experiences. Therefore if anything negative is picked up by the schema. in regards to innovation this template is made and therefore innovation can be decreased. This idea is put forward by Bordia et al. This suggests that psychology can provide an explanation for how and why innovation can decrease. If these ideas are taken knowing why innovation in the workplace will decrease can point occupational psychologists in a direction where they’re able to increase innovation. Research by (Schweiger & Denisi, 1991) identifies the different ways uncertainty and anxiety can develop at work during mergers and takeovers. They highlight communication between the top managers and people in power with there employees as a way to reduce both uncertainties and increase innovation. Though the research is focused majorly on the impact of mergers and takeovers on staff it demonstrates the way that occupational psychology actually can affect change in a business. This doesn't directly provide evidence that occupational psychology can improve innovation in the workplace, it more so implies that occupational psychology can identify the reasons as to why changes in behavior in the workplace happen.
