How Nursing Theory and Conceptual framework are important to in healthcare This paper will define what a nursing theory is and the components that make up a nursing theory. It will give a visual aid of those components. Lastly, it will explain why nursing theories play such a significant role in both healthcare and research.
Definition
Nursing is more than just a day-to-day task list. Nursing theory is defined by Thompson (2014), as specific and concrete set of ideas that mean to account for and guide the discipline of nursing. Today, nurses are providing care to complex patients with multiple co-morbities. Nursing theories and research play such a significant role in how nurses practice. Each theory is linked to research data which is incorporated in patient care and interventions.
Nursing theories are important because they set the foundation of nursing knowledge and define the scientific basis for nursing as a profession (Al Gizani, Al Hammadi, & Iskandarani 2012). Theories are what the nursing profession is built on and what defines why nurses do what they do. Theory also provides a systematic, reliable way of thinking about nursing care to guide the decision-making process in caring for patients (Avant et al., 2016).
Like mentioned above theories and research go hand-in-hand. They guide research studies by describing, explaining, predicting, and understanding a specific relationship between variables of interest (Thompson, 2017b). A strong theoretical background enhances the nurses critical thinking and decision-making process which allows for a more holistic care approach and a higher quality of care (Al Gizani et al., 2012). Everything in nursing is based on evidence-based-practice which is researching the best and most productive way to care for patients. These skills enable the nurse to choose the best care plan.
