Even though it is tough and sometimes stressful, nursing is one of the most exciting and in demand jobs in America today. Because of its shortage, it is also a rewarding career. There is a huge selection in the type of work you could actually do, from pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, labor and delivery, ICU to home health or public health nursing. They can be even hired by pharmaceutical or medical equipment companies. There are so many different directions nursing can take you.

Seeing my grandmother who is critically ill has moved me even more to help the underserved population. It was then that I became interested in being a nurse. However, I want to work with people where I would make a bigger difference in their lives. Being a nurse is part of the medical profession and it can be rewarding both mentally and financially.

Another reason I chose nursing is because there is a need and the need is increasing every year. I grew up in a small community and I want to serve the type of people that I was surrounded by as a child, particularly those who do not have adequate access to healthcare. It is an awesome feeling knowing that I provided care that allowed them to get well and recover.

An old lady leaving the hospital was saying her goodbyes to everyone. Before she left, she said to the Nurse, “Physical therapy taught me to walk, but you gave me my life back.” Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a Registered Nurse.

I was told by my parents in order to accomplish your dream you must work hard, graduate from high school and continue your education by going to college. This dream of being a nurse led me to the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.

The University of South Alabama is...

I am inspired by my cousin who wanted to have a career in nursing but didn’t have the opportunity, so it’s almost as if I am trying to accomplish this for her. I am trying my best to pursue and accomplish this goal of mine in hopes that I do have the opportunity that my cousin didn’t: to be a Registered Nurse. Right now my main priority is to keep my dream alive and make my parents proud.

Most Registered Nurses work directly with the patients and their families. They are the families’ contact with the medical world, in the hospital and at the patients’ home. A nurse does frequent evaluations of the patient and check vital signs to make sure everything is going as planned. Nurses perform procedures such as IV placement, phlebotomy (process of taking blood samples from the patient) and administering medications.
