Deciding to become a physical therapist has been a journey. When I was eighteen I did not know what I wanted in a career, I just knew I wanted to help people. I have learned, and made mistakes and even fallen a few times, but each time I got back up and my passion to help people grew stronger. Now I know that what I am passionate about and what I want to do as a career are the same thing; I want to be a physical therapist. My experience with physical therapy began with my rehabilitative process. As an NCAA division one volleyball player I was constantly pushing my body to its limit and managing injuries quickly became a part of my training program. The clinic I work in sees a wide variety of patients, from the pediatric to the geriatric, all with different reasons for needing physical therapy. Every day that I work has become a learning opportunity for me. I love watching the progress patients make and being a small part of their success. With each session, their confidence grows and they are able to progress to more difficult exercises. While the patients all have different injuries, almost all patients work on balancing exercises. Balancing exercises seem to be the most dreaded in our office because patients are afraid to let go of the bar in front of them. Although I am standing right there to catch them if they fall, they must trust themselves enough to let go of the bar and try to stand upright. The best part of taking a patient through balance exercises is watching their confidence grow. The office I work in utilizes five therapists who all have their own patients. The schedule at the start of the day is definitely different then it is at the end of the day. No matter how many reminder calls are made patients come in at different times or show up without an appointment and therapists do their best to accommodate their patients. This usually results in the therapist having little down time leaving all of their charting to do at home after a long day. I have also been able to work on the insurance and billing side of the clinic. I have verified patient's insurance eligibility and checked to see what codes are covered and not covered by insurance. All things that are important to the way a therapist may choose to treat a patient or the way they have to bill. I know that physical therapist entails doing a large amount of paperwork as well as communicating with other medical professionals to make sure a patient receives the best care
