Entering my first year of college I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do. I still didn’t choose a major let alone a career. I was stuck in between wanting to make enough money that my family would be taken care of financially and choosing a career that I wouldn’t mind going in to work every day. The one thing that I was certain of was that I wanted to be able to help people in whatever I chose to do. After careful consideration and exploring the options available to me, I have come to the conclusion that I want to have a career in physical therapy. Physical therapy is the treatment of disease, injury or deformity through physical methods rather than through drugs or surgery. One of the biggest influences that I had when coming to this decision was my family. When I was younger I never realized how much we struggled financially. I was offered a kinesiology class as an elective. Kinesiology being an integral part of physical therapy. I decided to take it because I was on the football team and I was required to keep myself in top physical shape. From what I understood about kinesiology, I thought it would be helpful to know the inner mechanics of working out and staying physically fit. During my time in that class I learned about the musculoskeletal system, nutrition, anatomy, and just about everything that has to do with kinesiology. At the time, I didn’t really consider a career in kinesiology, I had a stronger interest in science, but my interest in kinesiology was still prevalent. Had I followed this interest, my choice would have been way easier to make and I would already have a plan of what I want to do. Becoming an Occupational Therapy Assistant has been an ambition of mine for several years now. After researching, job shadowing, and talking to professionals, I have decided to make Occupation Therapy my career. My passion is to help patients by participating and assisting them in their recovery from injuries and disabilities. My compassionate and caring attitude will be vital assets in pursuing this career. After training in Occupational Therapy, it is motivating for me to know that I will be a part of assisting patients to gain back their independence. Helping others is something that I am passionate about in my career and in my spare time. I have been on several mission trips to Haiti and other places which I have provided care for others in a medical setting.
I chose the path to physical therapy because I love helping people, and it seems very interesting to me. Being involved in sports and exercise almost my entire life, I can easily relate to the treatments/therapy athletes go through when injured. Now I would like to see what it’s like through the eyes of the caregiver. I plan to pursue PT graduate school after WCU and then eventually have my own PT office, or work in a clinical setting.
While growing up I had many ideas of what professional career I wanted to obtain, although until recent years, occupational therapy was not even a thought. It was not until my grandmother had a stroke that I even knew what occupational therapy was or entailed. I watched my grandmother participate in therapy leading her to learn how to tie her shoes again, and the things I thought were so simple as to dress herself again. It was during that time as high school graduation was approaching that I realized I wanted to be apart of that. I wanted to have a role helping others learn and exceed as she did because I seen how much joy it brought her. This experience opened my eye to the things we so often take for granted, that some people lose the ability of doing or lack the ability of doing. After four semester of perusing a degree in the engineering field, I came to a realization that this is not a career that I was truly passionate about. It lacked the personal connection that I want in a lifelong career. My high school interest and fondness of anatomy and physical fitness led me to the tract of Kinesiology, and soon to the path of becoming a physical therapist. Physical Therapy is an occupation that allows me to work one on one with someone, and create a bond that is rarely ever formed in any other occupation. I never thought that I would purse something more than a bachelor. Actually, I am the first in my family to pursue higher schooling so I did not know much about it until I discovered physical therapy. I have been fortunate enough to have found something I love and am passionate about. Observing has given me so much motivation to continue. There have been many incredible experiences that reassure me this is what I want. At one of my observation experiences, there was a young girl that had an Ilizarov apparatus on her leg. The therapist that was working with her allowed me to help with holding a thera-band in place or tossing a ball back and forth. She told me she had come from a different country to have this procedure done. I found it so inspiring that every session she worked hard even when she did not feel her best. Beginning at the age of six, I have played some type of sport year round. I was always a bigger kid growing up, weight wise and height wise and unfortunately, I inherited bad knees. Combine this with the perils if sports plus some bad luck, the saying “the bigger they are the harder they fall” was a reality for me. When I fell, I fell hard. It took a lot of pain for me to want to go to the doctor’s office. I have spent a lot of time there. I’ve had many physical therapy sessions as well. I’ve also had numerous conversations with active athletic trainers and people that were athletic trainers in the past. They all said the same thing, “I love my job.” In the 8th grade one particular therapist sparked my interest in becoming a physical therapist.
My understanding of kinesiology prior to enrolling in the course, is that I knew kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement , and that it involved sports and exercise and physical activity.I 'm interested in kinesiology , because I love anything that has to do with sports, and to get more of a detailed report on how human movement plays such a big role in the sports world.I have played sports for most of my life my interests our football, basketball,baseball.I started football my eighth grade year, and continued to play threw high school, until I tore my meniscus and mcl so I skipped my junior year of football , and came back my senior year had a really great season started at right offensive tackle.Missing my junior year in football really took a toll on me ,I could have gained so much more experience playing if so. As children our reply is usually a general occupation like doctor, astronaut, pilot or something else that is common. Many kids who say doctors do not understand how many fields of medicine are available out there. For someone who enjoys helping others through the difficulties in life, becoming a physical therapist can bring satisfaction and enrichment. Physical therapists are “highly-educated,licensed health care professionals” (“APTA”).
This was until I took Introduction to Kinesiology and I began to rethink my career options. During the semester many guest speakers came in to discuss their careers and what options we had as students. One of our guest speakers was an epidemiologist and described his career, and instantly I started researching careers in epidemiology. I decided that a Master’s in Public Health is the best option for myself. While in the program I plan to focus on the specialization of health administration. Overall I feel Health Administrators have the biggest impact on a large amount of people. Health Administration is the right career for me because it involves planning and coordinating which I’m extremely good at thanks to the responsibilities my two part-time jobs thrust upon me. Once I graduate from the program I would like to work in a small health care facility, such as a rehabilitation center. Eventually I would like to work my way up to the CEO of a health programs, but before then I would like to experience all the positions in healthcare administration
First, a career as a physical therapist would be my primary choice, with occupational therapist being my secondary choice. These careers are extremely similar in terms of salary, educational requirements, and necessary skills. The primary difference between the two professions is that physical therapists focus on helping those who are victims of unfortunate accidents and face a sudden and drastic change in their life. My mission statement is that I want to become a physical therapist so I can use the gifts God gave me to serve others and to worship God in serving. Before I can accomplish this I need to set out goals for myself, both long term and short term goals, and attain those goals and make those steps towards my mission. My short term goals for this physical education project are to become stronger, stay active, learn new sports, and improve in old sports. To accomplish these short term goals, I need to work out or play sports at least twice a week and at least forty minutes at a time, at least an hour if the activity is a group sport. From a young age I was interested in the medical field. As I became more exposed to the various options, I decided physical therapy was the right career for me. My experience has proved the field to be interesting and fun. I enjoy working with people and the versatility of therapy. There are many areas to specialize in and I look forward to learning which one is right for me. At the moment I am interested in pediatric acute care but I am also interested in sports and orthopedics. As I continue my studies, I look forward to learning about the different fields in which physical therapy will take me. For the longest time I was unsure, and apprehensive about what profession I wanted to pursue. The medical field particularly intrigued me, from physical therapy to therapeutic recreation. However, occupational therapy is what caught my attention originating from my grandfather.
In high school, the second semester of 11th grade in fact, is when I have put a lot of thought into my career. Many others have had their mind set, which is why I was always so hard on myself. Ever since, I have never been so serious about anything. I am looking forward to working with people and helping them when they fall, mentally and physically. The first thing I made sure I did before my senior year was to sign up for as many classes that will help me for my career; such as anatomy, psychology, and many other sciences. In the next month or so, I am going to job shadow a Physical Therapist, possibly at Ortho Arkansas. This will help me getting a better grasp of a typical day as a physical therapist. The next thing I will have to do is make sure I will be taking the right pre-requisite classes in college. I am going to take the kinesiology route for Physical Therapy. My goal in college is to get my master’s degree in Physical Therapy, possibly a doctorate’s degree. After four years of preparation, I will be as ready as ever to get into graduate school. Since I now have researched all of the important facts about what it takes to become a physical therapist, the pro’s and con’s, information about current trends like the new health care laws, and learned about where the field is at today, I can now make a more informed decision about this career choice. At this time in my life I’m not prepared to take on the requirements that are needed to get into the DPT program. I am still interested in the field and since I can get a bachelors degree in any field to start the requirements for the program I may still consider this occupation as a career choice and pursue this more in the future. I do enjoy helping people and working hands and have always been interested in the health care field so this will be a great option that I’m now more informed about. 13
