I grew up in a single parent home very poor. I knew I wanted be something that would allow me to make decent money. It was difficult for me to decide if I wanted to teach biology or become a physician assistant. So my advisor said, major in biology education and if you decide to go on and study to become a physician assistant you will be on the right track. I did just that. The one thing I enjoyed along this journey of confusion was being able to spend time in the classrooms at Page High School in Greensboro. It completed my day, to be able to help the students and occasionally give the classroom teacher a break. The true rewards come from their accomplishments. In my class accomplishments are not just the “mastery” of an essential standard, getting an “A” on an assignment nor passing the End of Grade test. They are the times I hear my students using what I have taught them for personal enrichment. It is the times I see in their eyes the look of true compassion and understanding of another culture. It is when I can open their minds and their hearts to help those in our community and throughout the world. These accomplishments extend beyond our classroom walls. I am dually certified in Science and Social Studies. I enthusiastically welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities into my class. From day one of class, I encourage all of my students to prepare for this journey we are about to take and embrace the challenge. Students are asked to commit to hard work, perseverance, and mental stamina and they are assured that the rewards will be plentiful at the end of the school year. I emphasize the importance of recognizing and admitting your weakness so that you can receive the help needed to improve on that particular standard. I share with the students who don’t have a love for science that over course of the year, they will have a change of heart for science because the lessons will be hands on and exciting. The students quickly learn that we are in this together and it isn’t enough for them to get the standard and leave a classmate behind. I encourage them to help one another often. My goal is for each student to master the NC Essential Standards, pass the End of Grade test and be prepared for high school.
