In the reading “Who Goes to College” written by Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes I was able to see myself in her situation. When she was a senior she had no idea what she was going to do her following year, all she knew was that her parents wanted her to attend college. She always wanted to work, she liked being able to provide for herself but her parents always told her that college would come first. She had no clue of how college worked, what classes she would take or what she would do there. After all the confusion she had of what college truly is, she began to love it. With her graduation day coming soon, her mom made sure to remind her that she will be attending college. “‘you’re going to college’ my mother told. Actually it was not so much a statement as a command- that’s the way Mami often spoke” this was stated on page 101 in paragraph. This stood out to me because it reminded me of how my own mother is, she would always tell me that I would attend college, I had no other option but to attend college if I wanted to be successful in life. She was referring to college, she was a senior who had no idea how college worked, or what college she would attend or when she will go to college. In my opinion she did not know this because she didn’t have someone in her family that attended college fulltime, or went straight after highschool. She had no clue how to apply to school, nor what school she wanted to attend. She had no clue what she wanted for her future, her guidance consular was no help to her. This reminded me of myself when I was a senior, being the first person to attend college was hard because I had no clue what I had to do, or how college worked. I believe that she is extremely happy that she went to college even though it might have been one of the hardest obstacles she has
To women in the early 1900s, education was a vital investment in achieving a career and having a well-sustained lifestyle. In Sara's situation, attending college meant exploring the American culture and furthering her studies in teaching. On pages 210-213, Sara demonstrates her excitement for attending college. She states, "This was the beauty for which I had always longed for!" (211). Later into the novel, Sara reflects on her experiences while attending school. Her experience in being around people her age was a way for her to understand the American culture and know that she was now a person of reason. In effect, Sara provides an insight into her overall journey in college and life in the novel by mentioning "Now I saw them treasure chests of insight. What countless years that I had thought so black, so barren, so thwarted with want!"

From the outset of the story there is an overwhelming sense of hope that has enveloped the entire community and school with the upcoming graduation. The communitie's involvement strengthens the authors excitement in her rite of passage. Everyone is preparing for the ceremony and seeking to see how it will affect the lives of those involved. "Only a small percentage would be continuing on to college" (835) and others were just excited for the "glorious release" (834) from school. She felt like she was on top of the world, after all, "the graduating classes themselves were the nobility" (834). It is obvious how much pride she takes in her community by the way she describes her class as "an extended family." (834). The author's school was not the most impressive school compared to the white schools in the area but that could not damper the spirit that was filling the air. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Starting college is an intense and confusing event that plagues all recent high school graduates. It is like trying to run when all you can do is crawl, and for many freshmen, myself included, one can get easily overwhelmed by the daunting task of picking a major when less than two months ago some of our parents still packed our lunches for us every morning. To obtain or not obtain a college a degree has been the thought running through every person’s brain that has gone through and completed high school. For me, I remember sitting down with my mom one Sunday morning watching Good Times while she was reading that day 's paper and drinking coffee; just out of the blue I dozed off into my state of consciousness and started wondering what and how life could be if I decided not to go to college at all. So I turned around on the couch and faced my mom, who was highly concentrated on the article she was reading, and I just blurted out, “Mom what if I choose not to go to college?” She sat her coffee and newspaper down on the table and said “Well if you don’t go to college then you will be stuck working 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs just to survive and support yourself. And I’m not going to be of any help to you if decide this route. It's all about balancing out your schedule, getting enough sleep and taking care of your business. You have to take it upon yourself to work hard in class and apply for scholarships. The price you pay to attend college, you don’t choose, but you do choose what you do with your education. Everyone’s situation is different, but that doesn’t make college impossible. With some hard work and motivation, college is definitely possible.
