Leading is not as easy as people may think. In order to be an effective leader one must possess certain traits and abilities. Acquiring these traits and abilities can occur over time for some individuals, but some are natural born leaders. In the military, leadership roles are often given to the wrong individuals. Currently the Air Force is noticeably undermanned. The Air Force felt that something that can help solve the issue of having to few people in leadership positions is to raise the promotion rate. This way the leadership roles can be fulfilled quicker. This was a horrible mistake. Several of these individuals were not ready for the responsibility that this new rank entailed. Since he had not been performing maintenance for three years he had forgotten that he had to answer to supervision since being promoted. Our supervision does not coddle people if they make a mistake. They make sure they know that you made a mistake by screaming at you until they feel that you understand the severity of the mistake that you made, this way you will not make this mistake again. Since my supervisor made mistakes often, he was getting screamed at often. He did not handle this well. Sometimes he would cry, other times he would lash out on me to make himself feel better about his own situation. My supervisors leadership style was full on autocratic (Hiriyappa 2009). I could never try to provide some insight without him telling me to stay in my place. I was a young airman when I deployed and in order to come back a better airman I needed to get more hands on training and this was difficult to do since my supervisor had to do everything himself and he would never let me do anything but remedial tasks.
