In the first half of chapter 5, we look into the economic of New England and how they were lagged behind compared to the Middle colonies in the United States. Two of the main reason of New England’s declining population and economy were densely settled lands and the Puritan orthodoxy faith was inhospitable to other religions. Whereas in the Middle Colonies had huge population that consisted mostly of Immigrants and many of them had a skilled labor to being to America. Many were farmers who left their homeland due to droughts or poverty stricken lives.

The only way the population could increase in New England was through Natural Increase. However, many childbirths gave mother shorter life expectancies. There was also limited land available …show more content…

The population was quite diverse consisting mostly immigrants ( German, Irish, and Scottish) who tripled the population. The colonists refereed to the Germans as Pennsylvania Dutch- name given by colonists to german immigrants in the middle colonies- mainly had jobs of artisans, merchants, farmers, and laborers. German immigrants were seen as middle class in a way because they were not the poorest nor the better-off. Many of the Scots-Irish- Protestant immigrants from northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England- many were skilled in being a farm laborers or tenant farmers. Before many of them were able to achieve the luxuries the middle colonies provided, many of the immigrants started off as redemptioners- kind of indentured servants, a captain agreed to provide passage to Philadelphia, where the redemptioners would obtain money to pay transportation- unlike actually indentured servants, redemptioners negotiated with their purchasers about amount of servitude. While there was still slavery, only those with frugal amount of wealth were able to obtain that luxury. Mostly, those who had some extra money were able to hire immigrants to be servants. Men servants had jobs of artisans, small manufactures, and shopkeepers. Whereas, women were mostly hired to be a housekeeper and nanny.
