Why do you want to become a master's level social worker? I want to become a master’s level social worker because I would like to work in the healthcare; hospital setting after I graduated. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), a master’s degree in Social Work is often required for social work positions in health care. Health care social workers most often work in hospitals: anything from pediatrics to oncology. The social worker caseload includes people who need to come to grips with difficult diagnoses, locate resources, and make life’s immense decisions. While the focus is not necessarily the mental illness, the master level social workers sometimes diagnose or treat concurrent mental conditions (NASW, 2011-217). Therefore, this is the reason I want to become a master’s level social worker. What areas of social work are you most drawn to? I find myself mostly drawn to mental health/health field since I am interested in addressing problems such as addiction, abuse, or mental illness. These are empathy, active listening, and social perceptiveness. Empathizing is both an intellectual and emotional process that makes it easier to understand and help others solve their problems (John, 2012). I supposed most social workers are empathetic by nature because social workers help clients cope with problems such as poverty, abuse, addiction, unemployment, educational problems, disability, trauma, and mental illness. Likewise, social workers provide individual, family and group counseling, case management services connecting clients with resources and service providers, and other services to empower clients to meet their own needs.
