Why do you want to become a master's level social worker? I want to become a master’s level social worker because I would like to work in the healthcare; hospital setting after I graduated. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), a master’s degree in Social Work is often required for social work positions in health care. Health care social workers most often work in hospitals: anything from pediatrics to oncology. The social worker caseload includes people who need to come to grips with difficult diagnoses, locate resources, and make life’s immense decisions. While the focus is not necessarily the mental illness, the master level social workers sometimes diagnose or treat concurrent mental conditions (NASW, 2011-217). Therefore, this is the reason I want to become a master’s level social worker. What areas of social work are you most drawn to? I find myself mostly drawn to mental health/health field since I am interested in addressing problems such as addiction, abuse, or mental illness. Social workers who specialize in mental health issues work with clients battling mental illness, substance abuse, …show more content…
These are empathy, active listening, and social perceptiveness. Empathizing is both an intellectual and emotional process that makes it easier to understand and help others solve their problems (John, 2012). I supposed most social workers are empathetic by nature because social workers help clients cope with problems such as poverty, abuse, addiction, unemployment, educational problems, disability, trauma, and mental illness. Likewise, social workers provide individual, family and group counseling, case management services connecting clients with resources and service providers, and other services to empower clients to meet their own needs. Therefore, if the social worker lacks empathy, she/he would not be able to connect with people in
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
The Masters degree of Social Work (MSW) is a degree that defines who you are and where you are going career-wise. If you are getting a Masters Degree in social work you are most likely going into the field of social work. This deems the question of why I want to go into the specific field of social work. A main reason for me to go into the field of social work is that social work fits my set of values moreso than any other field I am qualified for. Social work is a profession inherently about helping people improve their lives. That kind of work is noble and something I would like to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to do things and have a career that would help people and empower their lives. I believe helping people is the only way I can have a clear conscience and sleep well at night. My personal values center around helping people but also about helping people help themselves and improve their own lives. I do not want to treat people who utilize social work services as charity cases or as victims. That is not fair to those people and strips them of their humanity. I hope I can utilize my career as a social work to do as much good as possible in the United States and in the world.
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
What does it mean to become a social worker? Why was I committing two years of my life to school after renouncing further education? I asked myself this after I applied, waited anxiously for my acceptance letter and scrambled to figure out the finances after I was accepted. I could not have guessed that the first day of the Micro Human Behavior Social Environment (SWG 510) would capture my attention and thrust me into the professional world of Social Work. As I learned more about what it meant to become a social worker, I found myself aligning to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ethical Standards as reviewed through Foundation Course I’s first chapters.
Being that I am a sexual abuse survivor, I have a particular affinity towards other sexual abuse survivors because I can relate to their challenging situations and life long process of healing. I believe that this will help me connect with them accurately and more effectively. Aside from working with survivors of sexual abuse I have an interest in military social work, gerontology, public welfare, corrections and justice, community development, and international social work. ( apparently I cant narrow these down LOL
I am interested in this because I care deeply about others and want to make a positive impact on the world. Going forward I plan to peruse a Master’s of Social Work, and then become a medical social worker in a hospital setting. I have limited experience working in the medical field, but I believe this is an area I will enjoy working in and one in which I can apply social work skills and knowledge to assist patients. Although I am excited about this type of work, I am also open to other experiences and
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
As a psychology major, I have always been interested in the mental processes of individuals. Another aspect that has always peaked my interest is why. Why do people act the way they do and make the decisions that they make? With social work, I am given the chance to analyze their environmental influences on their mental state and am more likely to answer that why question. Not only that, but I can find solutions for those individuals.
Working with people, helping others to achieve their day to day living has always been my passion. When my close friend and his family were going through some hardship in their life, thus when I realized that helping others was not just about assisting with personal care, giving out medication, patching up wounds or broken skin and assisting to the toilet. As there had been some issues with alcohol and drug misuse, the social work team had to intervene to ensure that the health and safety of the family was maintained. The professionalism, commitment and the positive outcome from the involvement from the social work team made me realize that ’this is what I have always wanted to be’. Doing a social work degree at university will equip me with the right knowledge, skills and support to go and achieve my ambitions.
I enjoy Social Work so much because its about going out and making a difference in a person’s life. It might not be something that changes their lives but every small act
Another aspect of social work that makes me want to pursue this career is the settings in which social worker work at because they are ideal to me. I could see myself working in a school, senior centers and other aging services organizations, prisons, private practice, corporations, military. social services agencies. elected office and policy advocacy organizations. If not social work, I still want to maintain to a field that will give back to the community and help people in any way possible because I believe that it is important for people to get the help that they need on their
Social work education and training is today vital foundation for the profession. There are currently three levels of education and training in social work profession: baccalaureate, masters and doctorate. The demand of education in the United States came about from practitioners, the communities, and the philanthropic agencies and the federal government that employed social workers and required competent services for its clients (Dulmus & Sowers, 2012). Social workers need training and expertise in a wide range of areas addresses effectively the multiple, complex transactions between people and their environments (Zastrow, 2009).
The pathway to turn into a social worker is not easy, in both getting a degree and choosing an occupation. In order to obtain a degree in Social Work it’s better to do some search before jumping in a school that is not fully accredited. It is important to enroll in a program that has been accredited by the Council of Social Work (CSWE). I believe the education has great importance for the social worker occupation because without education services cannot be planned. For example if we talk about a patient that needs treatment for depression.
My goal is to work in a mental health setting as soon as I graduate with my BSW. I would like to see if I should get my masters in social work or get my doctorate in psychology. I will encourage their opinions and ideas as well as help them form plans to better their
Social work is of great interest and personal significance to me and eventually I hope to fulfil my ambition of becoming a social worker. Having worked as a volunteer at the safe project, which is a domestic violence helpline I have come to realise that I have a passion for helping people. I very much take pleasure in the work I do and it has taught me a great deal. As well as this I am currently studying Preparation for social work at Demontfort University, where I have proved I am a committed student. I am hoping this course will enable me to achieve a place on the social work degree.
