When I think about the profession of Social Work I can visualize it as a social action profession that it is fully dedicated to the human well-being. In my opinion, this line of work is more considered to me as a vocational than an occupational career because it is performed by people who really have the desire, and the inclination of helping others in many ways. Even though I consider it more a vocational Career, I also believe the social work profession requires an appropriate education for an effective performance of it. The pathway to turn into a social worker is not easy, in both getting a degree and choosing an occupation. In order to obtain a degree in Social Work it’s better to do some search before jumping in a school that is not fully accredited. It is important to enroll in a program that has been accredited by the Council of Social Work (CSWE). I believe the education has great importance for the social worker occupation because without education services cannot be planned. For example if we talk about a patient that needs treatment for depression. The Social Worker will need to make evaluations and psycho social assessments that will point out what kind of service plan this patient need. Through the education the Social Worker student will learn how to apply social work methods when working with individuals, groups, or community problems. The students will develop self-awareness and discipline to use them as an agent of change in an individual and group situation. In addition, it also helps the student to acquire knowledge, skills and work methods that will give them the ability to make use of community resources in support of the social welfare. As part of their jobs, effective social workers learn communication skills that allow them to interact with people from all lifestyles and backgrounds. They can be brokers, advocators, facilitators, educators, organizers, etc. I refer to the term broker because they are involved in making referrals to link a person o family to needed sources. Social Work professionals not only provide information. They also follow up to be sure the needed resources are attained. This broker process requires knowing eligibility requirements, fees, and the locations of services. They play the role as advocates because they fight for the rights of members of society. Social Workers are particularly concerned for those who are unable to speak up for themselves. Advocacy can occur on the local, national, or state level. Some workers are involved in international human rights and advocacy for those in need. In the facilitator role, workers are involved in gathering groups of people for a variety of purposes including community development, self-advocacy and policy change. They are involved as group therapists and group leaders. They are considered educators because they are often involved in teaching people about resources and how to develop particular skills and aptitudes. Social Workers are involved in many levels of community organization and action including economic development, union organization, and research and policy
