The activity that I cherish the most and am the proudest of is playing drums for my school’s marching band. After the long, arduous nights of making sure our drill is perfect and playing the show repeatedly until it becomes second nature to us, marching band is the one activity that I am always striving to be better in. It taught me that if one wants to achieve greatness, one must be willing to put a serious amount of effort into everything one attempts. It instructed me that the road to success is suffused with deterrents and that failure is a state that we must become comfortable with. ...a life lesson. The military style of drum line is what has helped me improve in my schoolwork, my family life, and my friendships; I was trained to never give up even if success seems impossible.
I am a runner. I was selected to be a cross country captain for my senior year and I had set myself a realistic goal of being one of the top five finishers at the state meet in the fall. I never had the thought that I could not do it; I knew I was going to be up there with the best. When the state meet came and I traveled with the team as captain, that race became one of the most memorable of my cross country career but not for the reasons I expected.
Looking back on my highschool career as a cheerleader there are some accomplishments I’ve obtained that I am very proud of such as being varsity cheerleading captain for three consecutive seasons, getting the opportunity to participate in the Varsity Spirit Spectacular hosted at Walt Disney World and being a recipient of 2015 America Needs Cheerleaders Pin It Forward along with many others. But the accomplishment I am most proud of is receiving my Pin It Forward by a Universal Cheerleading Association staff member in the summer of 2015. At the time I had been cheerleading for 12 years and I have received some awards but nothing that meant what this accomplishment meant to me. Pin It Forward is rewarded to cheerleaders who promote values encouraged through cheer, such as leadership, spirit, commitment, kindness, and motivation.
One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Out of the three years I had spent in the band, the biggest influence on my decision to try out came from my very first marching season, between August and December of 2012. A community is a group of people who share something in common whether it be location, interest or a common goal. Communities are what bring people together and that is exactly what happens in marching band. Marching band is a way for people to find their place and make friends. It is very important not only for growth in music, but also for growth in character and friendship. There is only one requirement for marching band and that is to be able to play an instrument and be willing to practice hard. The people who join marching band do not need to have similar like and dislikes, majors, or even anything remotely in common.
It gave me memories, opportunities, my best friends, and the best group of seventy or more people I could have ever hoped for. Without band I would not have gone on to any of the leadership positions I acquired, would not have met my best friends from my hometown or at college, and I would not have accomplished nearly as much as I have. It gave me confidence, respect, and discipline, qualities I am very grateful to have. Above all else, it gave me music. The ability to play an instrument is something I will never lose, and a talent which allows me to express my emotions and thoughts in a less forthright manner. I firmly believe that the marching band is the soundtrack to every student’s high school career, whether they are in band or not. Because with every football game, pep rally, and national anthem they hear, a family of band nerds sat in a room for hours each week perfecting it. No high school experience is complete without the band marching on at half time, or crowds of people cheering along to the fight song or alma mater. Marching band is the kind of activity that changes you in ways you do not realize until much later when you look back on the experience. The formation of the Concert and Wind Ensemble bands dates back to the Middle Ages and Medieval Times. The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble have evolved over the years, due in part to significant historical events, music combinations, individuals, and progress.
If someone had asked me back in sixth grade what my passion was, marching band would not have ever even crossed my mind. First of all because there is no marching band in sixth grade. Second, when I got into band in sixth grade, I was the worst French horn player in my section. I knew absolutely nothing reading music or playing and although I was still just learning, I always thought I had no chance to get better and that I would quit, but I didn’t. I stayed in the band and my opinions changed my freshman year of high school.
Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout has been one of my greatest accomplishments of my life. Getting my Eagle Scout has given me three great benefits; the first one is many life skills, benefits while applying for a job, and people look up to me as an Eagle Scout. Getting this award has been a great honor and has taught me many of the life skills needed to be successful in today’s modern society.
In my freshman year at Lewisville High School I joined the wrestling team. Originally my only reason for joining this discourse community was to lose the weight I gained over the previous summer, but that changed when I got to experience the joy of wrestling firsthand. Being a part of the wrestling team helped me understand the inner workings of the sport, the importance of team chemistry, and what perseverance can accomplish. Joining this discourse community was the best decision I made high school by far.
Although the actual game is usually the key focus during football games, there are many other integral parts that make up the game day experience. Next to football, the marching band is a main act that is a big part of the overall experience. From the high school level all the way up to the college level, marching band has become a competitive and admired aspect of football games. If you look up at the stands of a football game with a marching band playing, you can more often times than not find fans singing and dancing along to the music that is hyping up both the players and the crowd. When thinking of my activities, the first thing that comes to mind is lacrosse. Lacrosse has been a huge part of my life since the moment I picked up a stick. Lacrosse caught my attention because it was a challenge to get better daily. Throughout my whole life, lacrosse was my main passion and made me strive to get better. My freshman year of high school, I was the only freshman named to the varsity roster. The following year, the leaders of the team all graduated, so I decided it was my turn to establish myself as a leader on the team. Junior year, I was named team captain, and lead the team back into the WPIAL playoffs for the first time since my freshman year. That season, I was the team leader in both goals and assists. Theatre. That is the activity that I think of when one asks me what has impacted my life. Theatre is one of the most riveting and demanding interests of mine. From the first moment I stepped on stage, I knew this was the place for me. Musical theatre consists of three major parts--acting, dancing, and singing; which are difficult skills to master, even if you are naturally gifted. You have to memorize lines, choreography, and music notes, all of which are performed at the same time. Rehearsal is a challenging workout that leaves you exhausted! Musical theatre is rigorous; from auditions, to rehearsals, to shows, you are constantly seeking to improve your skills. During my life I had some accomplishments. But, I will tell you the truth I cannot call them as my great accomplishments. At this point of my life I had the two greatest events. My first event was my high school graduation. The second event, which was the biggest and the most unforgettable was my wedding day.
Throughout my early childhood, I went through several different phases. I practiced an abundance of different activities such as: dance, baseball, tumbling, gymnastics, and even baton. However, none of these sports or hobbies stuck. That is, until I discovered volleyball. Never have I felt the love for something as much as I did this sport. Volleyball has had an unimaginable impact on my life in so many ways. I would not be the person I am today if not for this sport.
