Magnet Schools are schools that offer special programs to promote educational excellence in a particular area, such as computer science, math, the arts, or foreign languages. These schools were originally created to attract students from a wide variety of districts to achieve integration. These magnet schools are able to overcome residential segregation patterns and are able to create a more diversified student population. The parents of the students usually pick the school that is best suitable for their child, usually one that revolves around their child’s talents or interests. There are more than 3,000 magnet schools in the nation and about 20% of U.S. students attend them. Many criticize magnet school claiming that they lure the best students and teachers away from city school and that they might even worsen stratification among schools by family income. In my opinion, I do agree that magnet school may lure the best students and teachers away from city school; however, it is the parent’s choice.
