“Love”, the term often used to describe an intense feeling of deep affection towards someone or something. The film “Loving” tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving and the obstacles they had to go through in order to be able to love each other. Their story took place in 1958, Virginia, prior to the rise of the Civil Rights movement. At this time in the state of Virginia, Anti-miscegenation laws stated that mixed-race couples were a violation punishable by jail time. Due to Richard and Mildred Loving having married in Washington, D.C their legal contract was not accepted and respected in the state of Virginia, they were seen as violating anti-miscegenation laws and forced to spend time in jail. They were able to fight for their love and family and face all odds against other people whose beliefs they did not agree with. Although, they faced a lot of obstacles they were able to make their dreams come true. Interracial marriage has been seen as a sinful act by many christian churches since the colonization of the United States. American churches continued to believe that Christian traditions forbid interracial unions. Richard and Mildred Loving fought against the law and changed it but they could not change the beliefs of people when referring to religion. They were often called a disgrace of God and accused of committing sinful acts by the people in Virginia and other states. Religion had a major impact in this case, the people opposing Richard and Mildred used biblical condemnations to support their opinion on interracial marriage. Family also played a major role in this story, the goal for Richard and Mildred was to create a safer environment for their children, a place where they would not be judged or criticized by others because they are mixed races.
