When conflict arises , it destabilizes relationships . A concrete example of interpersonal conflict happened between the restless 20-year old optometry patient and the staff of the Emergency Department in the 5th case. Horizontal violence is not a topic that medical faculties discuss on a day-to-day basis, but it is an enormous problem within the health care system. In this research the author looks at bulling from a registered nurse (r.n.) aspect .The effects on patient centered care can be detrimental for patients and r.n.’s. The work place needs to be a safe place for not only the patients but also the employees. With the rise of new graduate nurses who are employed by the medical facilities, they too are starting to face horizontal violence within the first year on the job, which leads to retention of nurses in the medical field. Nurses are caring by nature. Nurses care for family members while at home, community members who may be neighbors, church members or friends from school and sports with children in common; however, nurses are known to display uncaring attitudes towards each other. When nurses are discourteous and disrespectful towards one another this may be known as workplace incivility. Incivility is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “the quality of state of being uncivil and a rude or discourteous act” (n.d.). Alexander (2017) related incivility to the events of the 2016 United States election as “rude and impolite behaviors that may be manifested when people feel fear or mistrust” (p. 79). Healthcare is subject to the same negative influence through communication between healthcare providers, educators and patients.
Employee psychological health is something that should be taken into consideration when a person can improve the outcome of new graduate nurses and seasoned nurses alike; this is something that I know I will continue to strive for creating healthy working environments for staff and myself. Using many of the techniques that have been researched and continue to keep abreast of the most current research will aid in achieving the most positive outcome for staff and patients. What is conflict? According to Masters & Albright (2002), “Conflict exists when two or more parties disagree about something” (pg. 14). Is conflict bad? Not necessarily, conflict can be good or bad. In fact, according to Lewicki et al. a moderate amount of conflict can be productive where as too little or too much conflict can result in complacency or chaos (as cited by Almost, 2006, pg. 447). In healthcare organizations, like other organizations, conflict is an everyday occurrence. According to Thomas, “managers spend approximately 30% to 40% of their workday dealing with some form of conflict” (as cited by Haraway & Haraway, 2005, pg. 11). Conflict will exist between nurses and physicians, within a healthcare organization, and between the organization and other organizations. This conflict can affect the treatment that patients receive. The key is being able to utilize good conflict while effectively managing other conflict which can be destructive to an organization. In determining how to effectively manage conflict within the organization, this report will cover conflict within a healthcare organization, conflict between health care organizations, the effects of conflict on patients, the effects of good conflict, and how to manage conflict.
In this assignment, I will be discussing an interpersonal conflict between me, and my best friend Celine, due to lack of time for each other. The goal of this paper is to present possible conflict resolutions and carry out a strategy to resolve the conflict. I will discuss multiple strategies, as possible options to resolve the conflict, including escapist, challenging, and cooperation. Working as a nurse in a psychiatric facility I see many conflicts on a daily basis that need resolved. Not all of them are life or death, most are pretty mundane, but nonetheless I must utilize some form of conflict management to resolve the situation. There are three types of conflict that are dealt with; staff versus staff, staff versus patient and patient versus patient. Sometimes the staff difference in thinking is the most difficult to be resolved since we all learn the same information but apply it differently. Question one and twenty were similar in the type of remediation that was necessary in order to stop the conflict from occurring. Conflict has always been part of our everyday life. Different people have different ways of seeing life; based on their own cultures, traditions, values, norms, gender, views and attitudes. We are always surrounded by conflicts, whether it’s with our family members, friends or coworkers. Conflicts can be both positive as well as negative. But it has always been mis-conceptualized and mislabeled as a negative. A conflict between two persons can take place not only on the basis of cultures and genders, but it can also relate on your living standard at home or nature of your work. I experienced and resolved an ethical conflict during my first year in the nursing field. The incident occurred at the long-term care nursing facility, at which I worked, in which I witnessed verbal, physical, and emotional abuse of several patients at work by a disgruntled certified nurse assistant (CNA). As a mandated reporter, I had to inform our supervisor of the events I witnessed. In this case, I had observed a particular CNA cursing at patients and calling them foul names, neglecting to care for them during the night, which resulted in entire bed strips and skin breakdown, and roughhousing them when they were not complying with her demands. She bullied and intimated not only the patients but the staff as well. Given the women's demeanor, many of my co-workers were fearful and would not report the wrong she was doing to patients. Despite being mandated reporters and witnessing the horrific, unethical treatment of several seniors (abuse/neglect), the other nurses chose to remain silent to avoid conflict.
