Objectives

· To increase the safety of the pedestrian.

· To increase the drivers awareness of pedestrians on the road

· To increase pedestrian safety if the car hits the pedestrian.

· To increase drivers safety on accident with pedestrian.

Concept

Using a scan and process independent computer, this system is designed

increase pedestrian safety, by indicating to the driver the presence

of a pedestrian by an outlined transparent image projected unto the

screen. It detects pedestrian, position, distance from car, light

conditions and stopping distance -taking speed and weather condition

from the already present car systems. With this, it prevents the

information unto the driver with brightness indicating risk

possibility. On event of a collision, airbags on the bumper and on the

bonnet are activated systematically preventing injury to the

pedestrian.

Subsystems

Sensors: The sensors do the detection. There are three main sensor

groupings in the system. These are the optics, the light monitoring

sensors, and the airbag pressure sensors.

The Optics: This is the main sensor array, consisting of two FLIR

(Forward Looking Infra Red) cameras and a night vision camera. The

FLIR package operates by building an image based on the level of

infra-red radiation emission of object within its field of view. The

level of Infra-red radiation emission is dependant on the temperature

of the object from which it is sourced, therefore Infra Red optics are

also commonly known as Thermal Imaging. This is accurate enough to

distinguish the outline of a human or animal hazard in the road.

Because the FLIR cameras interact by provide a real time image stream

to the processor, their output can also be filtered for moving or

stationary objects and objects within a certain temperature range.

Alongside the pair of FLIR cameras is a night vision camera allowing

the driver to see an artificially brightened image of the road and

pathways ahead. It enables the driver to have a clearer picture of the

road ahead, mainly during the night and in poor light.
