Is Social Network good for the youth?
Social networking has become a controversial topic, at the same time, a special influence on teenagers in the 21th century. Somehow, the social platform has become an integral part of modern life because of its convenient nature. A social network can be defined as one of social connections and personal relationships. It also refers to dedicated websites or other applications that enable the users to communicate with one another, by posting images, information, messages, and comments. On the other hand, others use the same, in order to gain access to new updates as well as entertainment materials. Indeed, social networks, such a Facebook, has changed the way young people interact with one another and the society at large. The increased popularity of such social networks has raised concerns among both scholars and individuals. Fundamentally, the majority is more concerned with the effect social media has on the younger generation and society. Some are of the view that social networks affect young people’s lives in a negative manner. On the other hand, there are scholars who defend the use of social network. In fact, our younger generation seems to forget and are blind about the side-effects of social networks, while they enjoy high-tech facilities that are filled with numerous leisure and entertainments. However, I strongly believe that social networks will not only have enormous influence on young people’s mental health, such as the sense of being more isolated, or feeling lonelier than ever before. According to Forbes, “almost a quarter of Americans say that they’ve missed out on important life moments in their quest to capture and memorialize them for social media”. Clearly, social networks truly enable people to meet with ease. However, our younger generations also facing higher risk of mental illness, cyberbullying as well as sexting. These days, the younger generation are losing out on the personal touch, as a result of using social networks. Some people have thousands of friends on the social media who they do not really know or interact with. Meaningful relationships are dying, simply because of these networks. Individuals avoid meeting in person, as they can communicate through social media. Relationships break as a result of such behavior. People ought to appreciate the importance of developing meaningful relationships. Just meeting people for the sake of doing so can become very dangerous. The risk that one will meet a person with an intention to harm them is very high. For instance, a person can befriend another, just to get close to them before they engage in behaviors that will harm the clueless user. Families fail to maintain closeness as a result of using social media. Critics fear that if the trend is left unchecked, the future does not look very good.
