The Hundred Years’ War Outline
I. New Weapons evolved in the Hundred Years’ War
A. The French had more soldiers than the English, but the English had newer weapons that helped them to their victories.
1. “The English first secured their communications across the channel with a naval victory at Sluys in 1340; they then could turn to a land invasion of France” (Sherman, et al).
2. The English used the Welsh Longbow first against the Scots and then they saw how good it worked so they used them and brought along guys to use them to defeat the French.
B. The longbow was more effective thus using the old crossbows they had used before.
1. “ The longbow was a simple yet highly effective device that had greater range than the crossbow and could be fired at unprecedented speed” …show more content…

“ A long bowman could loose up to ten arrows a minute, compared to the crossbowman’s two” (Sherman, et al).
3. A pike was also a new weapon that was introduced to the English.
a. Pikes were basically a big sword that was stuck in the ground to help fend off knights who were riding on horses.
b. The pikes were first used against the Roman Empire and they worked great.
c. “ Some English foot soldiers brought pikes to France to support England’s horsemen, who were outnumbered by the French cavalry” (Sherman, et al).
4. Guns also started to entered into the war from China.
a. Guns misfired and did not shoot as soon as you told it to.
b. There was a pause between the time that a solider pulled the trigger until the bullet was actually fired.
c. “ However, the mounted knights simply grew too expensive and ineffective for the new warfare; the cuter lay with the infantry” ( Sherman, et al).

II. France had bad damage caused because of the war.
A. The whole war was entirely fought on France soil.
1. The Peace of Bretigny happened in 1360.
a. That was the first victory for the English army.
b. “ In this victory, the English had secured Flanders and the important port of Calais” ( Sherman, et
