Was Caesar a hero or a tyrant? Caesar did many things that show he was a hero, and a tyrant, but which was he really. Did Caesar deserved to be praised like he was, or assassinated? “A law authored by Caesar had been found, but not yet introduced, which would proclaim Caesar a living god.” Caesar did seem the type of person to be a tyrant, but what he actually did while he was in power was good for Rome.
Caesar was a good leader because he created a better Rome. Caesar conquered for Rome and expanded its already massive empire. Caesar was a war hero, “After his marvelous conquests of Gaul and Egypt, Julius Caesar had made himself consul for life, equivalent to emperor of Rome.” Caesar had created a very efficient Rome under his very efficient government. Caesar made the senate powerless, which was good because the senate was a terrible government. Julius Cesar was a man of many accomplishments. He was either loathed or loved, with no middle ground. His death came by the hands of his Senate, including people he trusted. There are no direct records of his assassination but there are “firsthand” accounts that were written after the event occurred. How he came to his death is known and stays consistent through many records. What greatly differs is how he is depicted in the reading, he was either a model politician or he was a selfish dictator.

Julius Caesar had that and more. He had the support of the Plebeian class because he worked with the people of Rome and wanted to see real change. Unlike many corrupt politicians during that time period that just wanted to benefit from their positions, Caesar wanted Rome to become stronger and better. During Caesar’s March on Rome, returning from Gaul, his army remained loyal to him rather than the city and government of Rome. They must have believed in and trusted him to make the best decisions for them. Why would they abandon their republic if they did not have a good reason? The play, Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare tells the story about a group of senators that conspire to assassinate Rome’s beloved leader, Julius Caesar. Caesar’s closest friend, Marcus Brutus, joins the senators and leads them as they get ready to attack. Julius Caesar can only be seen as a destroyer of the Roman Republic as he was arrogant, egotistic, and manipulated the government to his advantage. The Roman Republic’s republican form of government was intended to represent the needs of all Roman citizens. Yet Caesar’s arrogant actions during his reign turned the government into an organization dedicated solely to his personal gain of power, fame, and glory. At the height of his reign, Caesar had received every honor the Roman Republic could give him. He was the high-priest, a high-ranking judge, and pro-consul (Source 1). Caesar believed he also deserved to be dictator of Rome for life so he requested the title and was granted it. He was also made consul of Rome for ten years even though this position was only supposed to be held for a year (Source 4). But even this was not enough for Caesar; he wanted to be “king of Rome” and his arrogance led him to dedicate his life to achieving this title (Source 1). Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar set the standard of what a leader should be. However, despite the two leader’s great accomplishments, Alexander the Great is a better leader. Julius Caesar fit the components of being a good leader: an ability to make a good appearance, and an ability to speak well at public gatherings. Caesar was able to change Rome. He dodged outlawing and pirates, changed the calendar and the army, and conquered the area of modern France, and much more in his six years at rule. However, Alexander the Great also held the major three components, and his achievements show that he attempted to adopt democracy. He was considered to have been the foundation of western civilization. Both leaders were betrayed, however Alexander was more betrayed for his good deeds than for his huge weaknesses unlike Caesar. Both leaders are good and influential leaders from their time, but it is Alexander the Great that is better.
