The soft chatter coming from the hundreds of people sitting in the crowd immediately stops when the stage lights come on. They are almost so bright that they are blinding but they do their job of showing the 50 dancers shuffling onto the stage. As my friends and I wait behind the stage watching the opening dance act, we are completely silent, not wanting to be seen by the people sitting in the crowd. We have a dance recital at the Kansas City Music Hall every year, but this year it is extra special. For most of us, this is our 8th dance recital. We are used to having many dances but this year we are really overwhelmed because we have seven dances to perform. Our Jazz dance called “Me Too” is the second dance in the recital so as I get into the line up with the other girls, I can feel the butterflies dancing around in my stomach. When the music comes on we all snap our heads up and start the dance. During the first part of the dance I felt so happy. I remembered all of the dance moves and I remembered to smile the whole time. I kept dancing to “Me Too” but as we started the ending eight count, I made a mistake. I started doing the wrong part of the dance, while I was at the very front of the stage. I kept smiling, but on the inside, my stomach was doing backflips. I could not believe that I messed up. When I walked off the stage I started talking with my friends.
“Did you make any mistakes?” I asked my friend Norah. We have been dancing with each other ever since we were three, and we were still really good friends. I knew she would be honest with me no matter what.
“I made a few, but nothing too big.” Norah
