The pattern of work over the years seems to change from one era to another. With the advent of ever-growing technologies and innovation, the workforce environment and nature is moving from the traditional ways of working, thus creating a drastic change and a new revolution in it. This paper presents a critical reflection on how the nature of the workplace has been changing over the past years. The work life today completely contrasts with that of the past. In the past when there were only scant numbers of companies, people once joined the company did not want to move on to another one. This made them dedicated to a single company throughout their life. Since there was less option, less competition, workforce did not have any pressure so that they happily worked throughout their life. However, as various companies started to boom at various places, the choice of working in other companies increased. This, in turn, increased the competition which as a chain reaction, the impact of pressure directly came up the workforce. Thus the advancement of the technology and the increasing competencies in the work has created a massive impact on the changing nature of the workforce. Globalization has also played a role in it as the organizations tend to spread its business through their outlets and branches around the different parts of the world. This has made the organization's employee-centric and chooses those people who are capable of fulfilling their criteria in order to sustain their business in this competitive market (Mulcahy, 2017). Many decades ago, people worked for the same company all their lives (Semuels, 2013). When they retired they received a full pension and possibly a gold watch (Semuels, 2013). Nowadays there is not that much loyalty to employers and employees (Semuels, 2013). In the 1970’s companies had lifetime employees with a “long-term plan for developing talent internally” and they honored the employees for life (Semuels, 2013, p.1). Back then they estimated how much their company would grow and approximately how many employees they needed to achieve their goals (Semuels, 2013).
The fact that employees and companies are moving in different directions reflects how leaders and managers have dishonored contracts of employment. The neglect that employers have on employees’ in-service qualifications and entitlements is ridiculous. Informed by robust technology, discontented employees will step-out at the slightest opportunity. These realities in the workplace are only unrecognized by weak stewardship.
