Slaughter of the Innocents: The Holocaust Vs. Darfur genocide It’s terrible the things millions people have had to endure just to stay alive in the past, it's also incredible the extents people will go to stay alive in times of anguish. If someone announced that thousands of people were just killed in a third world country due to rebel groups, would it sound believable? It's happened way too many times in history. As humans most people have morals that tell them right from wrong, but more and more people are becoming blind to these morals. Although the killings that have occurred in Darfur don't exceed the number of deaths during the Holocaust, these genocides are the same on a scale of gruesomeness. In Darfur, hunger was widespread and very close to famine by the year 2,002. Darfur was home to around six million people, and several dozen tribes.(Straus 3) Not wanting to live in fear, a large majority of Darfur's population left their homes. An estimated 1.2 million Africans have fled Sudan because of violence. (Connolly 2) During the Holocaust, Hitler primarily targeted the Jews. First he eliminated anyone who was consuming resources and not contributing, such as the mentally and physically handicapped along with the elderly. While in Darfur the Janjaweed didn't target anyone specific, just civilians. They would take what they wanted, and kill anyone who stood in their way. These heartless radicalists enriched themselves by stealing livestock and attacking africans.(Power 1) Individuals who were most likely members of the rebel groups in Sudan were local camel herders, Migrating nomads, and others who traveled from Chad or other parts of Africa. (Power 1) The Jews were treated quite differently than the civilians of darfur. The Jews were kept alive and put into extensive work camps and made to do the Germans dirty work until death. During the 1940´s Jewish people were forced out of there homes, had all their rights taken away, and lost all of their belongings along with loved ones. While in Darfur, the people were forced to live in constant fear with no sight to an end of conflicts. The natives had to deal with murder, rape, and succumb to assaults on several camps. Villages and agriculture was ransacked and then burned.(Reeves 1) Satellite images even show many areas in Darfur burned and abandoned. (Straus 3) In September of 2005 U.S. officials reported that 574 villages had been destroyed and another 157 damaged since 2003. The- UNAUMID or, “United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur” failed to provide basic civilian protection and the cost was huge.(Stratus 2) Although there are some similarities between the holocaust and the genocide in Darfur, both mass executions were unneeded and unwanted. The toil millions of individuals have had to endure is mind boggling. The present and future generations must keep the memory of these tragic events as evidence for anyone who denies history, the more people we keep educated the less likely similar events will take place.
