Do you really know what a GMO is? Does it to more harm or good to people? Most of the general public doesn't know the true facts about GMOs. The definition of a GMO is a genetically modified organism which is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic techniques. To break it down, a GMO is the result of a process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted into the genes of another species. Many people have different views in terms of human safety, a common perception is that GMO containing foods have been adequately tested for the presence of allergens or toxins which can lead to harmful results. However, research show that GMOs are very helpful in this developing world. Despite the various arguments and …show more content…

GMOs enable farmers to be better stewards of the environment, allowing farmers to grow more crops on less land while using fewer pesticides and less water. Around the world GM crops have reduced pesticide spraying (1996-2011) by 9%, or 975 million pounds. GMOs require less pesticides and plowing, which that reduced the greenhouse gas emissions associated with farming. (GMOs Help Farmers Keep America Growing) Without GMOs corn would look like a little soy bean but with GMOs corn looks big, yellow and ready to eat. (Sci-Show: Why are GMOs bad?) Microbial products are increasingly common ingredients in processed foods, and the diagnostic tools used by the food industry to maintain food safety often have a biotechnological component. Using traditional biotechnological processes like yeasts are added to carbohydrate substrates such as sucrose; the fungi use these substrates as source of carbon and energy, and ferment them into ethanol and carbon dioxide. Without yeast, ethanol is not produced, and many of the flavours characteristics of each beverage are absent. And also yeasts are used in bread making that the production of carbon dioxide by yeast results in the formation of gas pockets, which drive the rising
