Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is an organism, such as a plant, animal, or any microorganism who’s had its DNA changed in different ways through genetic engineering that is not natural. It is an organism like every other organism, which produces thousands of proteins, but one or two of them are proteins that were chosen were specifically by humans. It creates unstable combinations of plants, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Majority of Americans in the US consume nearly 200 pounds of GMOs each year. 90% of US crops are genetically modified. The current use of technology for GMOs can be very useful. Less pesticide is needed to be used due to insect pest resistant Technology cuts down on the time that it takes to grow a crop. Technology can produce more food for less work and less money. “GM crops are frequently perceived as a ‘technological fix’, proposed by those who fail to address the underlying causes of hunger and poverty, which really require economic, political and social change” (Nuffield Bioethics 29). One of the most important pros about GMOs that everyone is concerned about is that it will produce a longer shell life, which will make it safer to transport to different countries. GMOs can also supply more nutrients and help fight world malnutrition making it better for Americans to eat, by making it healthier. “Seeds are genetically changed for multiple reasons, which include improving resistance to insects and generating healthier crops. This can lower risk of crop failure, and make crops better resistant to extreme weather.” (Mandel). The cons are, since many GMOs are modified using bacteria and viruses, there is a fear that new diseases will be created. Many people wonder if GMOs are safe, but since it is a relatively new development, long term effects are limited. “GMOs can pose significant allergy risks. Genetic enhancements often combine proteins not contained in the original organism, which can cause allergic reactions for humans”
