You might have heard GMO thrown around by scientists or news stations before. It stands for genetically modified organism. This is a relatively new technology that has sparked a huge debate. Organisms are genetically modified by taking genes from one being and transferring them to another being in order to change the qualities of the resulting species. Now this seems like a very good thing, and in some ways it is, but it has some very serious consequences. When humans start to tamper with nature, trouble is never far away. The same is true for genetically modified foods and organisms. When we genetically modify an organism, we are creating an entirely new species. This can mean disaster for the surrounding natural organisms. These GM crops, which have been created to fight pests and weeds, can easily win in a competition for survival. Long-term effects include endangering these unmodified species, or even driving them to extinction. Another problem is that consumers don’t know when they’re eating GM foods. You might be allergic to fish, and then you go grocery shopping. You buy tomatoes to use in your dinner that night, with no knowledge that they have fish genes that can trigger your allergies. Allergic reactions to these modified foods are just another issue that comes up when GMOS come into play. Also, when we buy these foods, we’re supporting big industries that have patents on all these crops. The fact that people can patent crops just because they stuck some new DNA in them doesn’t make sense to begin with, but furthermore, the local, organic farmers who don’t want to, or can’t afford to pay these industries to use their patented crops are losing business. GMOs also put less stress on the environment, by using less chemicals, and less tilling. Because they require fewer pesticides, land and water, GMOs help keep food production costs down resulting in lower prices for consumers. Some GM foods have a longer shelf life, allowing it to be transported to other countries who don’t have nutrient rich food. Better nutrition in the foods such as vitamin A-enhanced rice, or "golden rice," that is helping to reduce global vitamin A deficiencies. Another benefit is that scientists have engineered plants to produce vaccines, proteins, and other pharmaceutical goods in a process called "pharming."In addition to plants there are some genetically modified animals, such as a salmon, that grows much faster than the non-GMO salmon. But with many benefits comes many concerns. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. There are concerns over the fact that GMOs may lead to allergy risks, or even cause new allergies, although this has not been proven.Modified organisms may interbreed with natural organisms. The acronym GMO refers to “genetically modified organism.” Loosely put, it refers to when a gene from a species with specific traits is injected into an unrelated living organism leaving it genetically modified. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is an organism, such as a plant, animal, or any microorganism who’s had its DNA changed in different ways through genetic engineering that is not natural. It is an organism like every other organism, which produces thousands of proteins, but one or two of them are proteins that were chosen were specifically by humans. It creates unstable combinations of plants, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Majority of Americans in the US consume nearly 200 pounds of GMOs each year. 90% of US crops are genetically modified.
GMO's are genetically modified plants or animals in which their DNA has been altered using special engineering techniques. There has been lots of controversy in recent years over the health and safety of GMO's. America is the largest producer of GMO crops, and the rest of the world is slowly catching on. GMO's are relatively untested, but yield both positive and negative results. The future of GMO's is an uncertain one (ABC News, Obama signs bill mandating GMO labeling,2016).

What would happen if peanut proteins interlace into tomato seeds? Then people with peanut allergies would not be able to eat genetically modified tomatoes. There are many reasons to stop the production of GM food. It can produce serious long-term nature accidents, but there is no way to know much about it until is too late (“GM Food” 2).
Genetically modified foods are exactly what they sound like. They are foods produced by organisms that have had certain changes in their DNA by utilizing genetic engineering. Ever since 1982, when the FDA approved the first GMO, genetically modified foods and organisms have been skyrocketing. In 1999, GMO foods and crops dominated the markets. The big question here is are GMOs harmful to us? If farmers are spraying their plants with pesticides that kill off weeds and bugs what do you think will happen over time to us humans who are consuming these foods? Although, GMOs have a few positive health benefits it also has several negative effects. One positive of keeping GMOs around is because they are insect resistant. Since they are insect resistant none of the crops can be harmed by pests therefore, can be harvested. Many regular grown crops, with no genetic engineering or spray, are lost due to insects eating them. The negative effects of GMOs outweigh the positive effects. One big problem with GMOs, is people are beginning to have allergic reactions to these crops. Another huge problem is antibiotic success is lowering. One last risk is transgenic DNA transferring. With 64 other countries requiring labeling of GM foods you’d think that the U.S would jump on the bandwagon. We should be given the information of what we're putting into our bodies.
They are bad because GMO’s come with risks. According to text it says they “introduce allergens and toxins to food” and also create “super weeds” (Text 4, Graphic). This is not good because if people are being exposed to allergens in food, they are now more likely to develop allergies, which can be, in some ways restrictive to everyday life. Also, “super weeds” are emerging more and more as GMO’s are being used (Text 4, Graphic). This could become a problem because the more weeds that develop this trait, the less space there is for crops to grow, limiting produce surplus. This problem worsens because if it were to continue the agriculture industry would be completely wiped out. Some people argue and state that there would be “increased pest and disease resistance” if GMO’s were used (Text 4, Graphic). But looking at the facts, it wouldn’t matter because it would be too risky, due to the information given. In the end, GMO’s are harmful, causing “super weeds” to form in the environment and introducing toxins and allergens, leading to possible extermination of agriculture industries, and possibly creating a restrictive lifestyle for GMO
