One of the social determinant that can negatively impact the family’s health is low income factor. I can relate to this social determinant from a personal perspective. I grow up in China, where health care is private cash pay service. I often see many families suffer different illnesses due to low income factor.
According to Canadian Nurses Association (2005), studies since ninetheenth century have well supported the fact that low income family have substantially shorter life expectancies and more acute and chronic illnesses than higher income families. It not only affected how the family experience the illnesses but also how they recover from the illnesses (Canadian Nursing Association, 2005).
Nurse can ensure that this social determinant of health by following the nursing process, first step assessment. The data are gathered to determine a family’s state of health and factors that affect family’s well-being (Institute of Medicine, 1995).
