A person’s health along with the health of a community are influenced heavily by the social determinants of health. These determinants create a strong foundation for a healthy and proper development of a community (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013). Further, a proper foundation will allow the children within the community to develop properly, which will foster their potential for intellectual and physical intelligence. This paper will explore the effects of healthy childhood development, personal health practices and coping skills, health services and income and social statuses with in the Maple Leaf neighbourhood. Further, this paper will explore how the above social determinants of health directly affect the students of St. Fidelis school. Lastly, this paper will explain how the rise in cavities within these children is an issue as well as approached to overcome this issue.
Since the introduction of the Ottawa Charter in 1986, health promotion across the world has taken a more preventative, or “upstream”, approach. This was done through the enlightenment of the socioenvronmental approach that focused less on lifestyle choices and immediate medical intervention, but instead the factors that directly and indirectly influenced health (Cohen, 2012). In this revolutionary charter, the socioenvironmental approach introduced key predictors to population health, which are now known as the social determinants of health (Cohen, 2012). These determinants range from income to race and gender, and encompass all of the effects that these factors have on individual and population health. Mikkonen and Raphael perfectly summarize
As time goes by, a person must care for themselves. As a child begins to grow up their health can be affected by their families race economic status, and even a person 's gender. Since a person cannot control what economic class they are born into, it can cause hardships in regards to an economic standard.
Education is a social problem that is very prominent in the world today. Education affects not only children currently attending school, but what they do when they are older. It affects where someone may end up later in their life, what job they will have, and how much money they will be making. Unfortunately, not everyone graduates high school, goes to college, and earns a high paying job. The cards some people are dealt can be much different, and education today arises as a social problem because of income, family life, and the area someone lives. These three areas can really help someone in their education, but it can also set them back.
The determinants of health normally reflect the conditions within which people are born and continue on with their basic life. Determinants of health are also the factors that contribute to a person 's current state of health (Juha Mikkonen and Dennis Raphael 2014).The factors are behavioral, biological, social in nature, socioeconomic or psychosocial (Juha Mikkonen and Dennis Raphael 2014). Homelessness is not one problem, homelessness is many different kinds of problems involving many different kinds of people. Each of the homeless people has different reasons(James D. Wright 2005) Homeless people health may be influenced by the social determinants of health. This paper will discuss the three social determinants of health, social exclusion, income and social status and housing. According to Shaurya Taran, the only solution for some clients is to build new homeless shelters (Shaurya Taran 2016). Homeless shelters would effectively remove homeless clients from the street. They may also provide a more predictable daily routine(Shaurya Taran 2016).
Health is an important factor of our everyday lives. In James Henslin’s (2014) book, Sociology: A Down-To-Earth Approach, health is defined as “ a human condition measured by four components: physical, mental, social, and spiritual” (p.547). Having good health allows us to carry out the daily tasks of life. If we don’t have health, we can’t carry out the dreams that we may have. Health can be affected by many factors. A factor that could possibly be the most important influence on health is education. Just within the realm of education there are many factors that can help determine if education really is the most important influence on health. A person’s ability to maintain good health is based on how a person uses the education that they have received.
To continue, education is highly important as it greatly effects life outcomes. For example, people with more schooling earn more, live longer, and are in better physical condition. In regards to family life, the more schooling means the more chance for a marriage, a “very happy” relationship, and marry someone with the same amount of education as them, also known as education homogamy.
Today, in the contemporary United States, there are many different influencers to a person’s health, such as poverty and/or unemployment. However, education is the most important influence on health because without a good, thorough education, people are less likely to have access to health care, be able to afford health care and they are more likely to live shorter lives. A lack of education makes poverty and unemployment more likely, which obviously have a negative effect on a person’s health.
When we consider the education of our children in the United States, we must consider their health as a significant issue as it can positively or negatively impact a student’s education. It has generally been acknowledged that there is a great disparity in our country in the area of health care. Healthy People2010, a published report put out by the Health and Human Services Division of the Unites States Government (2000) has included as part of its Goals for 2010, to eliminate health disparities among different segments of the population. According to this report, health differences occur depending on a persons gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, rural locality, or sexual orientation. In this paper, I will mostly concentrate on racial and ethnic differences as well as socioeconomic differences. According to the Healthy People 2010 report, biological and genetic differences do not explain the health disparities experienced by non-White populations in the United States. Besides "complex interaction among genetic variations, environmental factors, and specific health behaviors," Health and Human Services says, "inequalities in income and education underlie many health disparities in the United States." Also, "population groups that suffer the worst health status are also those that have the highest poverty rates and least education." Health, United States (1998) reported that each increase of income or education increased the likelihood of being in good health. According to this report, those with less education tend to die younger than those with more education for all major causes of death including chronic diseases, communicable diseases and injuries. There are several factors that account for differences between socioeconomic and racial and ethnic groups. These factors include a lower sedentary life style, cigarette smoking and less likely to have health insurance coverage or receive preventive care among these groups.
In reality, people with an education tend to be very successful while the people without an education tend to be unsuccessful. Education is a key factor that defines the basis of human-beings and lays the foundation for human development. It also plays a major role in creating a huge gap in the division within the social classes. This huge gap is due to unsuccessful education that exists in society. There are many factors that contribute to unsuccessful education which include expensive education, the quality of education, and disadvantaged individuals. Education is an important aspect of society that needs affordability, skilled and professional teachers, and resources in order to be successful and conform to societal standards.

Over the years, the social determinants of health (SDOH) have been receiving more attention due to its importance in determining peoples’ health access, health quality and health outcome. The social determinants of health have been described by various scholars as the situation or environmental condition in which people are born, or where they grow, live and work; unfortunately these conditions have continued to affect and determine people’s ability to access proper care.1-5 In other words, the SDOH continues to consciously and unconsciously influence people’s access to most opportunities in life including access to healthcare services both in developed and developing countries.2 This issues have continue to deteriorate in most developing countries increasing people’s susceptibility to multi-morbidity among different age groups, with a slight increase among the elderly.6
Firstly, Rasheeda’s willingness to study has a positive influence on her health. This is explained by Australian Institution of Health and Welfare (AIHW) which states education is linked with better health (AIHW 2016). Having an education provides a pathway to a stable job, a secure income, adequate housing and support to manage their ill health (AIHW 2016).
The healthier a child is the better student they are and the better education, we provide for each child the a much greater outcome for health over that child's lifetime. Early education is especially important because this is where the foundation is set. The more education a child gets on a healthier life the long life they will live. If a child is informed at an early age about healthy behavior, it could help kids with healthy behaviors like handwashing, routine exercising and why it’s important to be on a vaccine schedule. Being able to give every child access to the same success and improving outcomes is what we called health equity. Education is important in improving earning potentials. It really simple that education
