Stress today, has become a common feature at work places. Various factors contribute to such stress. Stress does not influence everyone in the same manner. Studies show that different types and different levels of stress occur with the people at work as there are differences in individuals. Some people react very fast to the slightest provocation while some stay untouched even for a major setback. Therefore, we can say that it is a person’s emotional response to the given situations. Among such strategies, ‘Emotional Intelligence’ is that strategy which comes to the rescue of those who are under stress and guides them to respond appropriately to different stressors.
This paper aims at identifying the relation between emotional intelligence and stress management and find out to what extent emotional intelligence helps in coping with the workplace stress and pressures.

The right way to destress quickly is through one’s own senses such as taste, touch, smell and sight. Though each person responds differently to any given sensory input, one should realize those things that are reducing the stress quickly.
One should not get disconnected with the internal emotional experience so that he/she can appropriately manage the emotions. Every moment of emotions influence one’s thoughts and actions. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, and understand emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, efficiently communicate, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and to defuse conflict. By harnessing emotional intelligence, we can modify our own behavior and our interaction with other people. By utilizing high emotional intelligence, we are able to recognize our won emotional state and the emotional states of others, and engage with others in a way that draws them nearer to you (Cherry, 2015).
Emotional intelligence is the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions. (Ledlow & Coppola,
(Yoder-Wise, 2015, p. 7). Emotional intelligence involves managing the emotions of others while owning personal emotions. According to Skholer, “Researchers define emotional intelligence (EI) as the ability to recognize/monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to differentiate between different feelings, and to use emotional information to guide thinking, behavior, and performance.” (Skholer & Tziner, 2017).
Emotional Intelligence, also known as ‘EI’, is defined as the ability to recognize, authoritize and evaluate emotions. The ability to control and express our own emotions is very important but so is our ability to understand, interpret and respond to the emotions of others. To be emotionally intelligent one must be able to perceive emotions, reason with emotions, understand emotions and manage emotions.
An individual’s ability to control and express their emotions is just as important as his/her ability to respond, understand, and interpret the emotions of others. The ability to do both of these things is emotional intelligence, which, it has been argued, is just as important if not more important than IQ (Cassady & Eissa, 2011). Emotional intelligence refers to one’s ability to perceive emotions, control them, and evaluate them. While some psychologists argue that it is innate, others claim that it is possible to learn and strengthen it. Academically, it has been referred to as social intelligence sub-set. This involves an individual’s ability to monitor their emotions and feelings, as well as those of others, and to differentiate them in a manner that allows the individuals to integrate them in their actions and thoughts (Cassady & Eissa, 2011).
Emotional intelligence: This is most difficult concept to understand and master. This is the ability of the individual to manage the emotions of their own and of others. It can also be termed as “steer smarts” which is mostly possessed by executives of the company in order to maintain the relationship within the company as well as with the stakeholders. I scored moderate on the LOC, (specifically internal LOC) and EI assessments. When evaluating these two tests I found a relationship between my control of emotions and my fate. These surveys made it apparent that my capability to control my feelings provides a higher internal LOC. As Mohapatra and Gupta’s (2010) study suggests, “Being in charge of one's emotions leads a person to believe that he's in control of his/her life and can attain his/her goals by well directed efforts” (p. 16). At work I run into this correlation every time I am dealing with a customer. When I am socially aware of their emotions, I can micro manage my own emotions accordingly. In succession, this increases my relationship management capability. If I do not maintain a high level of EI at work I see my customers’ dissatisfaction as my fault. Therefore, when taking the fate of my customers’ happiness into my own hands, whether it goes bad or good, depends on my handling of the surrounding emotions. The definition of emotional intelligence given by Salovey and Mayer (1990) focuses on the ability to understand one’s own and others’ emotions and also to manage one’s own emotions positively. On the other hand, Goleman’s definition (1995) covers more aspects, including 25 abilities and skills such as trustworthiness, communication and empathy. The former definition is more scientific and appropriate while the latter one is called the ‘corporate definition’ because its contents accommodate the interests of large corporations. However, the academic findings of the two professors are not widely known while Goleman’s edition is commonly accepted due to his best-seller book ‘Emotional Intelligence’ (Goleman 1995). The following essay will be mainly based on Goleman’s definition.
