Racial Profiling of Youth of Color

For those who haven’t experience racial profiling, or know someone that has been a victim of it, it may seem nothing more than annoying noise in their ears. Profiling has consequences, which results in emotional, physiological, and physical damage. The ones that are the most at risk are the youth of color. Racial profiling result is harmful because it creates mistrust in law enforcement, hostile environment for people of color, and social tension in communities. As any other social issue, racial profiling has its own history dating back to the 1700s. The seed of hostile environment starts with the educational system. Youth of color has been disproportionately the subjects of harsh school discipline, which leads to incarceration. Racial discrimination in the criminal justice system leads to lengthy prison and lost of basic civil rights. Youth of color is three and a half times more likely to be suspended. Thirty nine percent of all expulsions in 2009-2010 were youth of color, who represent only 18 percent of enrolment (“Disparities in School Discipline Move Students of Color Toward Prison” article by Rachel Wilf). Based on these data students of color are more prompt after suspensions and expulsions to make the first step toward time behind bars. The education system creates hostile environment for youth of color, which pushes them to commit crime. By racially profiling children based on their color, law enforcement and security guards in schools ruin a live that has barely started. How is anybody to want to succeed in our society if the hoops they have to jump are constant? Youth of color always have to be a 100% aware of everything happening around them and never dare to talk or take a stand. If they take a stand, they are called racist, if they are quite, racists will find them and to put them in jail regardless.
