No Way Out
Throughout our state, our country, and our world, there is a rarely spoken of problem destroying the lives of innocent people every day. In America, 1 in every 4 women become victims of domestic violence (safehorizon.org). In many areas, there are programs that incorporate a combination of resources, to keep victims safe while simultaneously ensuring that they have a way to get out and stay out of abusive relationships. Here in Hays, many incidents of domestic violence are never fully resolved, resulting in the victim fleeing and reuniting with the abuser after finding they have nowhere to turn. Women and children become trapped. Not because they choose to be, but because they have run out of options. The resources meant to help them are incomplete, which forces them back into abusive relationships.
I have friends and family who also have, and a few who are stuck in it right now. Women who come from serious abuse are afraid, lonely, and often lack social skills. Having had it pounded into their heads for so long that they are worthless, they eventually start to believe it. Many abused women think they do not deserve any better. Abusers cut their victims off from the world, and that is how they manage to manipulate them to such an extent. In the U.S. child abuse has increased along the years and just seem to be getting more horrendous. It is a recurring issue that has been happening all around the world to innocent young children and most of these cases are being kept quiet about because they are too scared to tell someone what is really going on behind a closed door. Child abuse on a child is just as bad to someone who is witnessing it and still chooses not to take a stand and help them out. 54% of women victims of serious sexual assault were assaulted by their partner or ex-partner (Stern 2010). 19% of women have experienced stalking since the age of 16 (Smith (Ed.), Coleman, Eder and Hall January 2011). These statistics help give a picture of the problem but do little to shed light on the solution. There are many programs and shelters offered to victims of domestic violence, Hill Country Cares is one of them. Hill Country Cares is a government funded women’s shelter better known s HCC. This is a place where victims of domestic violence are referred to from many sources. (i.e. local authorities after reporting a domestic violence incident). HCC is a safe place where victims receive many different types of assistance while their situation, as well as the painfully intimate details of their abuse, are kept entirely confidential.
From facilitating this safety plan, I have learned how to help women move through their options for safety. I have seen that women can be even more creative, strong, and empowered than I imagined possible. Most importantly, this assignment has given me the opportunity to truly consider and offer an alternative to a life of abuse that many women have never heard of before. I believe that the safety plan is important to both the woman seeking safety from her abusive relationship as well as the advocate having trouble seeing the victim as able to overcome the risks of intimate partner violence.
The State of Texas and TCFV along with the city of Houston have recently hosted a program called “Partner to Protect: A Leadership Summit for Family Violence Programs and Law Enforcement.” This conference was formed to help victim advocates and law enforcement come up with better ways to respond to family violence in the community. The summit allowed advocated and law enforcement to share their expertise on domestic violence while explaining the in’s and out’s of associated with their jobs in order to help victims better understand any type of flaws that could happen during and emergency situation.
One of Americas’ most common global issues is domestic violence, a crime that is considered physical or aggressive behavior at home and typically through a spouse. What is sexual assault? Sexual assault is, “any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape” (Sexual Assault).
Statistical evidence can be used to stress the seriousness of domestic violence and the importance of having women’s shelters dispersed throughout the nation. According to recent surveys, one in every three women will experience domestic violence at some time during her lifetime. Domestic violence is also the leading cause of injury to women, with the abuser usually being a member of her own family. Finally, up to ten million American children witness some type of domestic violence every year (Fantuzzo and Fusco, “Children’s Direct Exposure to Types of Domestic Violence Crime: A Population-based Investigation”). These statistics show that domestic violence is a reality and that the efforts of women’s shelters are not in vain.
Women will continue to suffer from domestic violence unless there is some sort of intervention to help them. When dealing with this population, it is essential to create a safe environment where the woman can talk freely about the abuse without any retaliation from the abuser. When someone comes into a therapeutic session, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and care. This in turn will create a sense of hope that a different type of life can be possible. Also, knowing that there is a support system can help the woman begin the process of change. Despite this, the process of leaving the abusive partner is slow (Warshaw, n.d.)
The victims are blinded from the danger they are in because it is all they know in a relationship or feel it is their fault. Another reason victims do not leave their abusive spouse is fear (Rafenstein 6). The Article “How to Plan Escaping From An Abuser” says:

There are so many things that I have never found really interesting to me or at least something that could make me want to try and change it. I still don’t understand why people want to hurt kids. This is not something that should be a norm in our culture, but it is. This should be changed instead of just letting it happen sure it is going to be hard to charge, but there are still things that we can do to help kids that have gone through it and their parents. It also does depend on who abused them then they can go to jail. There are still things that we do not have a real understanding as to what sexual abuse is in general. It is not a well-known topic unless some has been abused. We assume that the victim is to blame them for what happened to them, but it is not their fault. We blame people because we do not want to see the perpetrator as the one who should be in trouble. In this case we do not have the knowledge as to what sexual abuse really is. Abuse has become so common that some people do not realize they are being abused. It is important that this topic is studied because there are many gaps of knowledge to what all an abusive relationship can entail. Many reports of abuse are not taken seriously. Authorities let the cases go then later on the women are hurt mentally, physically, or emotionally again. A “great majority of victims [do] not want to go to the police”(McKenzie, Baker, et al). Women are “locked in a cycle of emotional confusion”(McKenzie, Baker, et al). Not a lot is done for women who need the help lawfully.
Domestic violence is an issue that has affected many people regardless of age, race, or gender. The seriousness of it can vary dramatically. Domestic violence is the intentional intent to physically and/or sexually assault, batter, or has abusive tendencies against a sibling, parent, child (ren), or domestic partner. The overwhelming emotional, psychological, and physical ramifications of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime. Bringing an end to abuse is not a matter of the victim choosing to leave; but the victim being able to evade their abuser safely. Establishing, I Choose Life Organization, gives those victims a safe haven to get back that confidence and self-respect that they lost due to their abuser.
Domestic violence is skyrocketing in our society. In the U.S., as many as 1.5 million women and 850,000 men were physically assaulted by their intimate partner last year, and numerous children abused by their parents. These sad criminal acts will continue to grow in our society, unless our community takes action to stop these crimes. First of all, the most important tool we have available against this type of crime are the authorities, which include the police department, hospital, and social workers. If they manage to work together as a team to make the whole process of protecting a victim more efficient, it will encourage victims to actually phone for help.
