Throw Me A Bone Whether a person is driving down the highway, watching television, or reading a magazine, he or she is bound to come across advertisement. With technology’s rapid advancement, marketing and advertisement are pulling out new tricks to try to keep up. One of the many ways that advertisers try to reel people in is by appealing to their sense of humanity. I will discuss two dog food ads that make an attempt to do so. These ads try to represent pets like children. People should want the best products out there for their kids and pets. These dog food ads try to make readers put themselves in the minds of their dogs and wonder what they would want to eat. Both ads picture dogs, natural colors, words in large font, details in small font, and a smaller picture of the food with the company’s slogan in the same bottom corner. After analysis of the components of these ads, their mutual strategies can be seen. The Nature’s Recipe ad proved to be more effective in the magazine by using these strategies for several reasons. The Nature’s Recipe ad shows their main points in a larger font where people are likely to read them instead of in a smaller font where people may skip over them like Iam’s. The Iam’s dog seems to be questioning and confronting the reader, where the Nature’s Recipe dog evokes a relaxed, happy mood in the reader. The attempt to show faults of other brands through the comparion on the Iam’s ad may lead readers to believe that Iam’s is simply trying to show they are better than others. Nature’s Recipe doesn’t put other brands down and simply states facts and tells about company tradition. The Nature’s Recipe ad also would not offend any large group of people with their wording. The Iam’s ad’s comment about vegetarians may offend people who have chosen that lifestyle. While the ads are very similar, the Nature’s Recipe ad proved to be more
