“To protect and manage the Nation's natural resources and cultural heritage; provide scientific and other information about those resources; and honor the trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities” (U.S. Department of the Interior). This is the strong and proud mission statement of our nation’s Department of the Interior, which over looks over 500 million acres of U.S. land today. On March 3rd, 1849, on the eve of President Zachary Taylor's inauguration, a bill was passed to change the Nation’s internal affairs. The overall goal of this branch is to protect and manage our natural resources and cultural heritage. Throughout the years, this department has been lead by many great secretaries and today it is overseen by, republican Ryan Zinke. This department employs about 70,000 people, which includes scientist and professionals in resource management. In addition to the 70,00 people, there are also over 280,000 volunteers and 2,400 operating locations. This department was put in place to oversee all of the land that was put under federal control. The work needed to be split so that our land could be preserved and used in the best ways possible. Something needed to help with the new settlement of America, and preserve the beauty of the nation. I feel that the intentions of the Department of the Interior were successful and it was worth the resources to put it into place. Since we have had this department, the United States has thrived with our national parks, access of water to the western areas (Bureau of Reclamation), economic growth because of natural resources, and support to Native Alaskans and Indian
