The country needs to start monitoring how the government is spending the federal budget and they need to start splitting it fairly to benefit our country. 83% of the federal budget is spent on the Big Five which are the main expenses in the budget. We have to stop spending it all on the Big Five. Our government should really pay attention to what we need most of in this country and focus on the needs. The government needs to take away 20% of the Big Five and split it to categories that need it. If the government changes the way they spend the budget, then they can change the way our government is ran. We have to take away 10% of the budget, which comes from the Medicare/Medicaid category. That would give us 90,000,000 to add to another important category that needs the money. In this case we will be adding it to the categories of “The Middle Five.” The middle five is the second biggest category in the whole budget.The middle five only makes up 10% of the budget. According to Document D, Homeland security is the smallest of the middle five. Homeland security is a big part of protecting our country. If we add the 90,000,000 to Homeland security it would add up to 60,090,000,000 which could help make more security in the airport or help prevent terrorist attacks in this country. In addition to adding to the middle we have to add to the smallest of the 3 parts of the category, The Little Guys. The little guys make up 3% of the federal budget, which is not very much. Clearly the government is not splitting the budget fairly. According to( Document E) the smallest of this category is the National Park Service. The people on earth are cutting down trees and lots of national parks for their own benefits. We need to take the 10% of the defence budget and add to the National Park Services. This group includes Homeland Security, Justice, Education, Transportation, and Veterans Benefits. These are all very important groups however, there should definitely be some changes made. “Transportation is getting $103 billion to be used for construction and maintenance purposes while education is only getting $68 billion” (Document D). Transportation is very important because we need to have safe roads and bridges to travel on but education just isn’t getting a fair cut of money. Road and bridge construction should only occur when we are in absolute need of maintenance.

Because of this many Americans have long advocated for Military Defense cuts and redirections of funds to both the public sector and other Military Institutions like Veteran Affairs (VA) and Military Personnel Healthcare. If the U.S. were to reduce/re-appropriate the National Security Budget, they would see improvements in the public sector, in veteran care, and could improve other sections of the FDB (Federal Discretionary Budget). My first argument in favor of military budget cuts is that the budget should be reduced and funds redirected to military personnel and veteran care. The U.S budget deficit over the years has been a problem but lately the deficit has shrunk. However, what made the U.S budget deficit get to where it is today and what will it be like in the years to come. Throughout the past the U.S has operated under a deficit. This means that the U.S Spent more money than it was taking in. The cause of the excess in spending was different depending on which year. Some of the causes were war, increase in spending , and economic downturns. There were different acts passed to try and control the deficit problem. The deficit at the present time is declining. This decline is due to the improving economy, sequester, and a tax increase on high-income households. The big factor that went into the decline in the deficit for 2013 was the payment that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made. The deficit decline in the present time may make some think the U.S could get out of debt but it has been projected that the U.S deficit will start to increase once again.

Even though the government has a set budget each year that Congress and the President of the United States collaborate on, the United States continues to fall deeper in debt. According to U.S. National Debt, the U.S debt has been larger than our total annual gross domestic product since 2012. In other words, our debt is larger than the value of all the goods and services produced in the country within a twelve month period. “It is said that the U.S is currently $19.2 trillion dollars in debt (U.S. National Debt).” As long as Congress and the President continue to run yearly budget deficits, the U.S debt will continue to rise.

To further break down this nearly $500 billion base budget, roughly $200 billion is allotted for operations/maintenance, $135 billion for military personnel, $90 billion for procurement, and $65 billion for research/development (Gould & Bender, 2015). In a world where people rush to purchase lottery tickets at the hopes of hitting a jackpot worth a few million, these expenditures are incomprehensible and may seem excessive; however, not everyone feels this way. When the terrorist attacks occurred on 9/11 it did more than just affect the comfort level of American citizens. It had an all around impact on how this country will be run for years to come. The one economic impact that I will concentrate on is that the attacks, arguably, but directly effected the U.S. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and how the national budget will be handled from that day forward.
The government, as of now, has fallen into a bad routine: Throw some money at it and make it go away. These are short-term fixes to a long-term problem. By looking at this on a strictly monetary scale, we are not forced to look at our own accountability. We as Americans have developed this notion that the government should take care of us somewhere along the lines. More government is not the answer. To me, this is the easy way out. Besides, do we really want the government so involved in aspects of our lives they have no business being a part of?
