Recommended: Child abuse effects on society

Child abuse is one of many troubles experienced throughout our society today. It is a dangerous corruption that has serious detrimental physical and mental repercussions on its victims. These repercussions may result in the development of severe physical ailments as well as possible mental disorders from the recurring trauma. Beyond this, consequences range from impairment in the preoperational stage to antisocial personality disorders. Furthermore, many people stereotype the abused and believe they will grow up to commit the same follies as their abuser. This stereotype forces many of us to raise the question “Does the cycle of abuse perpetuate?” As stated by Kids Matter Inc. physical abuse is defined as “an injury deliberately inflicted upon a child by any person, including adults. Physical abuse includes fractured or broken bones, burns, severe and/or frequent bruises, and any other major physical harm” (Physical 2016). Victims of child abuse have complications in mental health development and may suffer from severe psychological disorders. Among the mental health deficiencies are “improper brain development, impaired cognitive (learning ability) and socio-emotional (social and emotional) skills, and lowered abilities in language development” (Child 2016). Jean Piaget reasoned that children begin to use language during the preoperational stage of their growth. As a result of abuse this developmental stage may be stunted, contributing to a delay in the abused child’s speaking abilities. Victims with psychological disorders may display signs of “depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and childhood behavioural or conduct disorders” (Signs 2016).
