College Essay

I was in 1st grade when I found out that I had a learning disability. I still

remember my teachers sitting me down in this little room with no other kids to

take a test. I wasn’t scared though, because I was a very outgoing kid.

Since that day I have been going to my schools resource program

everyday for my learning disability, dyslexia. I can honestly say though that this

disability hasn’t stopped me. I feel that I have to work twice as hard as other

students because my disability has forced me to.

I can remember many times staying up late on school nights sitting by my

Dad’s side at the kitchen table, working with my most difficult subject, Math,

because it just wouldn’t click. My Mom also played a big role in helping me with

my homework throughout school, providing encouragement, and always letting

me know how proud her and my father were of me.

It has been a continuous struggle that has affected me, even in my sports,

but my attitude and determination have persisted. I’ve danced for four years and

because of my hand and eye coordination had to put in a lot more practice to be

better than the other dancers. It has also affected me when I was on the high

school cheerleading squad.

I received awards in elementary school and junior high for the best effort

in classes such as Math. All throughout school I have felt determined to get out

of the resource center. My parents and I were always very concerned about it

because I had done so well in the program. The program allowed me to stay in

all the mainstream courses throughout school. Finally, for my senior year I felt

confident enough to forego the resource center, I am now performing better than

most students and have been on honor roll for the first two quarters of this year.

I can honestly say that I am a very dedicated, hard worker.
