Nursing is a practice discipline. The learning process for students commonly involves more than acquiring cognitive knowledge. This usually involves the practice of the student nurse taking the information that is learned in the classroom and applying it in the clinical areas. For the student nurse to provide safe, reliable care to the patients that he/she cares for, the clinical instructor must give thorough and timely feedback regarding the students’ performance (Indar-Maraj, 2007). The journaling allowed the student to self-reflect and make corrections as they saw fit. The instructor could follow the journaling and give feedback immediately to improve the care given. The relationship between the instructor and student is important for the success of journaling. When a student feels that the writing’s that he/she are submitting are remaining confidential, then the student will be more apt to divulge their real feelings and experiences (Riuz-Lopez, et al., 2015). Students find that they take owner ship of the learning by using the reflective journaling over the checklist format. The instructor gauges how they are doing by comparing the week to week journaling and communicating with the student. It allows the instructor to see if there is a connection between old knowledge and the newly presented information. The instructor is there to guide the student to further improve the journaling process. By directing students to collect pertinent information, by probing and asking pointed questions, instructors direct students toward thinking exercises that foster a deeper understanding. Again, this is when the instructor should give them feedback and offer support and reassurance. In the discussion, earlier I mentioned an idea of doing a social blog for the millennial age group and this may help prevent this barrier by having a designated area where they can go and that they may feel more comfortable using an online blog than to write a paper.
The third barrier mentioned is for the student to stay on track. If the first two barriers were alleviated, then this one may be easier to accomplish. Instructors need to be clear about the required content of the journal and ensure that the participants keep to the topic (Hayman, Wilkes, & Jackson,
