When you think of authoritarian leadership you generally think of corrupt militant leaders. However, there is more to this leadership style than meets the eye. While most of today’s successful authoritarian leaders aren’t purely authoritarian, they have many similar qualities. Some of the qualities are attractive, while others are very unappealing. In pure authoritarian leadership, one person makes all of the decisions. Everything that goes through the organization goes through the person at the top of the chain. This can be beneficial because there is a definite chain of command and each member knows directly who to report to. For instance, replacing a leader in an autocratic environment can be quite difficult. After an authoritarian leader dies, is removed, or steps down, people can become confused due to a lack of direction. This lack of direction can drastically, and negatively, affect productivity until a new leader is found. Additionally, this leadership style can be ineffective because one person can become overwhelmed when they have to make each and every decision. They must take the time to gather information on their own and must try to brainstorm creative solutions to make sure that they are making the correct decision. Group projects are much more enjoyable when tasks are evenly distributed to each group member. I have learned that if you are willing to let go of some of the control, group members are typically very willing to make a positive contribution to the project. This is especially true when you are allowed to pick the members of the group. As long as everyone is striving to do their best, there is almost always a positive outcome. Nevertheless, these groups generally still have one or two people who always step up to take charge and make sure that everyone is on the same page. I am generally one of these people and so I suppose in some regards I will always be a little bit
