Introduction:

My clinical experience for Nursing 411 will be held at South Beach Psychiatric Center. The purpose of this paper is to describe the leadership style of the nurse leader observed at South Beach Psychiatric Center as well as how their leadership style contributes to the working environment for the nurses. Also this paper will include theory which will analyze the leadership style as it correlates to the literature. The analysis portion of the paper will focus on comparing the findings to the theory.

The nurses in the department understand that they must perform at their very best because they understand that the nursing leader has high expectations. If one of the nurses in her department is absent more than one day in a row for sick leave, then he/she will be written up. After being written up more than 3 times, the nurse will be given a warning that he/she is in jeopardy of losing their job. Although some nurses may not be pleased with this rule, according to the nurse leader most nurses on the floor respect her decisions and her …show more content…

For example, authoritarian leadership style is very successful in emergency situations where there isn’t any time for suggestions from other staff members. Based on my observation at South Beach Psychiatric Center, the nurse leader displayed characteristics of an authoritarian leader. The nurse leader mentioned the disorganization in the department prior to her arrival and since her arrival there has been progress and productivity. Productivity is usually high during authoritarian leadership and staff members are usually motivated by coercion (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p.40). This is seen with the sick leave mentioned earlier because nurses are now aware that they are not able to just call out for no apparent reason and if they do it on a constant basis, then there will be repercussions. As the nurse leader had mentioned, the nurses in her department were aware of the high expectations that she expected from her staff and therefore they performed at their very best.
