It’s the beginning of a new month. Everyone is getting paid like they do every first of the month. A woman is sitting next to a man in the office as they open their pay stubs. They are both employed by the same person with the same job title. They do an equal amount of work, but she is a woman. She looks over as he opens his pay stub and sees that he’s getting paid $15,000 more than her. This is an example of the wage gap. She is getting paid 75 cents to every dollar the man makes.
The wage gap for the year of 2017 varies from just 12% to almost 45%. Averaged out, women get paid about 80 cents to every man’s dollar. Depending on the field of work, women do not get the pay they deserve. Women have taken a big step in the right direction since the time women could not work, but the amount of money women make should be even with men at the time. In 2017, men should make no more than women. The wage gap is the difference between men and women’s pay. The workplace should not be sexist. This will get better by carrying out the terms of the Lilly Ledbetter Act, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the Paycheck Fairness Act.
