This image says a thousand or more words. This African American woman has her mouth covered. I interpret that meaning is that we as African Americans have been silenced. When it comes to our issues being heard or the problems we have the majority ignores us and leaves us silent. And then looks confused when there are uproars caused because people of color want to defend their rights. Even though we 're all equal in writing, there is still an unspoken social tension that says otherwise. In this year alone, the United States of America has been under a social stress. The deaths of two African-American males, Eric Garner and Michael Brown, at the hands of white cops ignited an activist movement called Black Lives Matter. I truly feel that the outraged party are missing the concept of the whole movement. Black Lives Matter is necessary movement that is not saying the other lives do not, and it should continue until that unspoken social tension is resolved. With movements such as all live matters there has been a lot of tension.There have been riots and with that, outrage is completely understandable and outrage should be felt unanimously across America for these barbaric acts of vandalism and violence. It 's a constant reminder of historical tragedies such as Emmett Till, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X, but also outrage! People of color have continuously been “fed up” with the mistreatment and social injustice granted to them in this country. Referencing to the Civil Rights movement of the mid 1950’s and 1960’s, we see how multiple instances of unjust actions leads to riots, and no more sitting for peace but more so taking things into your hands. The movement picked up its momentum after the unified feeling and conversation of being “sick and tired, of being sick and tired” turned into action, and activist organizing groups to target specific issues. Strong, intellectual, heterosexual men took the driver’s seat of the movement, placing women, children, transgender, and the disabled in the back. The main claim of the article is that African Americans have been treated unfairly throughout history and are still being treated unfairly compared to Caucasians. Does “Black Lives Matter” really believe in the slogan they advocate for? Black Lives Matter or BLM was founded in 2013 carrying the slogan “hands up don’t shoot” following the shooting of Michael Brown by a Hispanic Officer. Black Lives Matter believes that we live in a society plagued by Racism(Rightsidenews). Looking at BLM as a movement makes it readily apparent that they’re the racist ones. Black Lives Matter should be abolished because they ironically enough don’t care about black lives, they skew facts to further their narrative and spread violence.

This paper was written to discuss the hot button topic, “Black Lives Matter.” Specifically, in regard to law enforcement. This has been an ongoing and controversial issue ever since the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. In the weekly readings for week five we see two readings that talk about the connections between women’s suffrage and black women’s identities. In Rosalyn Terborg-Penn’s Discontented Black Feminists: Prelude and Postscript to the Passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, we see the ways that black women’s identities were marginalized either through their sex or by their race. These identities were oppressed through social groups, laws, and voting rights. Discontented Black Feminists talks about the journey black feminists took to combat the sexism as well as the racism such as forming independent social clubs, sororities, in addition to appealing to the government through courts and petitions. These women formed an independent branch of feminism in which began to prioritize not one identity over another, but to look at each identity as a whole. This paved the way for future feminists to introduce the concept of intersectionality.

A large problem in America has always been racial issues and still continues to be prevalent in our society today. The United States likes to boast its reputation as a “melting-pot” as many cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds are mixed together, yet the country still continues to isolate individuals based on race. In the constitution, it says that everyone is supposed to have equal rights and liberties, yet after over 200 years, many minorities still struggle to obtain the same respect and equality that their white counterparts have always have. Laws should be created to enforce equality and justice for racial groups.
