Transcendentalism was a movement that began in the 1830s through the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. It has to do with self reliance, nature and the connection between man, God, and nature. It tells you to listen to oneself and go by one's own choices instead of what society tells one to do. It shows the beauty in nature and all of what can come out of it. People today often don't think that way anymore and have argued that Transcendentalism has died out over the years. However, one may need to take into account modern conception of individuality and the beauty of nature. The song “Come As You Are” by Nirvana sings about being who you want to be and not what society wants you to be and tells you to be an individual. Lyrics include “Take your time, hurry up, choice is yours.” This tells you to come as who you really are which relates to the Individualism idea of Transcendentalism. The song “Mother Nature’s Son” by The Beatles sings about the beauty of nature and how we can all connect through nature. “Sit beside a mountain stream, see her waters rise, listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies” are some of things they sing about nature in the song. This movement is about the equality of African Americans and saying that their lives matter just as much as other races who get more rights and freedom. This movement has gone on since the time of Martin Luther King Jr. In society, African Americans are lesser than whites and are given less rights, but in the Black Lives Matter movement, not only African Americans, but also many other races are going against what society says and protesting for rights from which they deserve. This relates to the idea of going against society and making your own decisions which relates to Transcendentalism.

Transcendentalism is affecting society in a good way through music and political movements that are going on today. Transcendentalism is still apart of american culture and still bringing people to nature and the connection between nature, God, and man. Transcendentalism has not died out and is still thriving in American culture through music of Twisted Sisters, Nirvana, kendrick Lamar, and The Beatles and the political movements of Black Lives
