Have you ever been just sitting there watching T.V. when suddenly that ASPCA commercial comes on with those depressing photos and sad music? Then that though comes into your head should I change it or continue to watch. Many people just pass by animal abuse like it isn’t anything, disregarding it and not really worrying about those animals whose voices can’t be heard or who can’t stop their abusers. Those people committing these disgusting crimes don’t know the affects it can have on them and even the animal they are abusing. Not only does it affect the abuser, it also has its tolls on the family, their social life, and the animals. This quote by Mahatma Gandhi shows why the law for animal cruelty should be stricter and increased. The facts back that with a stricter law on animal cruelty we can stop this ramped increase in crime and help but those people away who need help mentally. There are two different types of animal cruelty: neglect and intentional cruelty. “Neglect is the failure to provide adequate water, food, shelter, or necessary care” (What is Animal Cruelty?). Some examples of neglect would be: starvation; dehydration; inadequate shelter; parasite infestations; or even failure to seek veterinary care when an animal is in need of medical attention. Equally more disturbing than neglect is the brutality of intentional cruelty. “Intentional cruelty is involving deliberate physical harm or injury inflicted on an animal” (What is Animal Cruelty?). Some examples being: cases of animals being beaten burned, poisoned, or stabbed to death. Perpetrators of animal cruelty often depict themselves as kind nice people, making it difficult for people to believe that they have the audacity to commit animal abuse. “From the so called friendly neighbor, who mistreats his pets behind closed doors, to the so called respected community member, who operates a puppy mill or substandard zoo, there is no one identifying feature that marks a person as capable of committing such unfathomable crimes” (Animal Cruelty and Neglect). Abuse of any animal is depressing, not only for the pain and suffering inflicted on the animal, but for the fact that animal abuse is often a antecedent to human directed violence or domestic violence. If untreated, any type of abuse can escalate to horrible proportions and can really get out of hand fast. Fortunately, if people witness animal cruelty and neglect and report it to an organization with cruelty investigation authorities, legal actions can be taken
