“Doing your best, you are going to live your life intensely. You are going to be productive, you are going to be good to yourself, because you will be giving yourself to your family, to your community, to everything” (Ruize 78). Throughout life many people believe he or she cannot try their best because it won’t be good enough. However, Don Miguel Ruiz believed otherwise. Ruiz wrote The Four Agreements and discusses how important it is to try her or his best on everything a person does because they will then find happiness inside. Not only does Ruiz believe in this, many famous people as well, such as surfer Bethany Hamilton, the band Montgomery Gentry, Poem writer C.W Longenecker and war hero Louie Zamperini. However, if a person puts in all their effort mentally and physically there is not a thing that could change how happy they feel afterwards. A person can’t try any harder than her or his best but yet people feel like they couldn’t even put all their effort because they already have the mindset that it won’t be good enough. Bethany Hamilton was a female surfer who happened to be suffering at the wrong place at the wrong time and had her arm bitten off by a shark, however that didn’t stop her from giving up and saying that her dream was over, she worked harder than ever and put in all her effort towards getting back to her dream. She states in her book Soul Suffer: A True Story of Faith, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board “I think it doesn’t matter if you are the best surfer in the world. I’m going to try to be the best surfer I can be. It’s not all about competing and being the best it’s more about having fun and just doing what you love” and when a person does exactly that they will achieve happiness in their life. “If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you like to win but think you can’t, it’s almost a cinch you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost. For out in the world we find success begins with a fellow’s will. It’s all in the state of mind...” people’s state of mind matter’s on doing their best physically and mentally, when their mind isn’t there then neither is the success. When the mind is there, everything falls into place which causes success and determination. Doing her or his best will only cause one to find true happiness each and every time, however, it will not be the exact same each time. “But keep in mind that your best is never going to be the same from one moment to the next” (Ruiz 75-76) because reality does not work in that way. For one to do their very best the outcome will change each time as does their best. Once she or he reaches their best, their best will change to something more and they will have a new goal to reach for. Both Longenecker and Ruiz understand is that a person’s mindset and best will constantly change as they develop into something new and better.
