There are many inspiring quotes in, "I Beat the Odds" by Michael Oher, but one especially stood out to me. In the beginning of the book, Michael discuss his life in Hurt Village and describes how hard his life was he says, "The odds are stacked against you, but you can't let that be an excuse, you have too much to promise to let the odds beat you. It can be done. I beat the odds"(13). This quote made it really clear to me that I shouldn't let someone break me apart or tell me what I can and cannot do because of how I might look, this quote tells me that I can do anything I set my mind into doing. I will also apply this to my life by not making excuses if I can't do something, I will use this knowledge by doing anything that is a challenge,
Though the passage I have selected is short, I believe it is the most obvious indication to the main theme of the book, as well as a common goal for not only Duddy Kravitz, but countless others, fictitious and not. I could have chosen a longer quotation from the book, but I felt that this phrase clearly communicates to the reader that the "American Dream" has been a preoccupation with Duddy since he was very young.

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears”-Nelson Mandela. This quote from Mandela relates to the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor. The characters in Tangerine have you make difficult choices in their lives, but the choices don’t always end up right. Erik Fisher’s choices affect Paul in the novel by causing Paul to have vision loss, lose a friend, and lose self esteem.
At some point in life most people have allowed at least one challenge to defeat them, if not more. Then there are those people who view these challenges as simply that, a challenge. This was the theme throughout Kyle Maynard’s novel, No Excuses, I learned that it is how we go about conquering these challenges that defines us as people. Throughout his novel he notes things will not always come easily; therefore, it is up to us to dig deep and conquer our goals. By finding alternate routes and adjusting your mindset, we are able to achieve any goal we set our minds to. In my paper you will be pleased to find that I talked about three different quotes that really spoke to me from the book Stiff by Mary Roach. The first quote is from page 82, “the point that no matter what you choose to do with your body when you die, it won’t ultimately, be very appealing.” To me this is the main topic of chapter three, and it talks about different things you are able to do with your body after death in gruesome detail. The second quote I pulled from chapter three as well, it comes from page 84, it reads; “… at birth and at death. In between we do what we can to forget.” With this quote I was able to make a very personal connection that may or may not include my last two relationships. For my third and final quote, which came

There is something to be said about quotes. The way the knowledge of achievers is brought down to just a few lines. It gives us a sense of both reflection and wisdom. They are relatable and can guide us to a conclusion of where we are and who we aspire to be. In our quote assignment we are told to choose three quotes from a selection that was posted on the board every week. All of them can be related to my life in some way, shape, or form. However, these are the three that I believe relate to me the best.

Men sought to overthrow the tyrannical government and redistribute the land evenly amongst all Mexicans. Mariano Azuela in The Underdogs describes the adventures of a successful rebel group who undergoes a mission to eliminate Federal forces. Women, on the other hand, sought to expand their rights with society and to break the norms established. The women who decided to join the combat roles were referred to as Las Soldaderas.

Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid once said, “Empathy is about finding echoes of another person in yourself” (Brainy Quote). Hamid is implying that this quote means the reason humans feel empathy for others is when they can relate to that person in some way. In The Color Purple, Shug is shown to have had empathy for Celie after seeing how terrible Mister treats her and hearing about Celie’s troubled and abusive past. This empathy lead Shug to take in Celie and protect her from Mister before eventually revealing her love for Celie. At one point the pair even absconded to live together in Tennessee after acknowledging the feelings they had for each other.
The quote by John Green, “What's the point in being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable? How very odd, to believe God gave you life, and yet not think that life asks more of you than watching TV” is one of the quotes that stuck to me. I feel like we all can relate to this quote. Everyone wants to matter and feel appreciated in this world. Who wouldn’t? This quote inspires me to be the best person I can be and to succeed in life which is something we all want to do. To put it briefly, if you’re the type of person that is into books that you just can’t guess the ending to, this is the book for you!
